{"id":12590,"date":"2022-10-31T14:02:04","date_gmt":"2022-10-31T18:02:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/porticomagazine.ca\/?p=12590"},"modified":"2022-10-31T14:02:05","modified_gmt":"2022-10-31T18:02:05","slug":"u-of-g-grad-cycles-swims-runs-the-distance-in-world-triathlons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/porticomagazine.ca\/2022\/10\/u-of-g-grad-cycles-swims-runs-the-distance-in-world-triathlons\/","title":{"rendered":"U of G Grad Cycles, Swims, Runs the Distance in World Triathlons"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>She started triathlons as a youngster partly to make friends in her brand-new home country. \u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u202fNearly two decades later, Dominika Jamnicky, B.Sc. \u201915, is training for the Americas triathlon championships in Uruguay this fall \u2013 with her eye on ultimately qualifying for the Paris Olympics in 2024 \u2013 while completing the home stretch of chiropractic studies in Toronto. \u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u202fAnd in a kind of full circle, she\u2019s now coaching young aspiring triathletes in Guelph\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/GuelphDevelopmentSquad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Royal City Development Squad<\/a>, founded five years ago with her fianc\u00e9, Kyle Boorsma, M.Sc. \u201913. \u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI decided I wanted to give back to the community and share my passion for triathlon,\u201d said Jamnicky, who was 11 when her family came to Canada from Australia in 2004. \u202f\u00a0\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She spent her teens running, swimming and cycling in Port Hope, Ont., before arriving at U of G in 2010 to study biomedical science and to join the Gryphon team.\u202f\u00a0\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, some 20 area youngsters belong to the growing club, whose members train around town in their signature blue and gold. Recalling her youthful start with the sport, she says training and competing in triathlon gives kids \u201cessential skills for sport and everyday life. The most rewarding part is to see their smiling faces and see them enjoying the sport.\u201d \u202f\u00a0\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Ups and downs of a sport triad<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/porticomagazine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/jamnicky-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/porticomagazine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/jamnicky-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Dominika Jamnicky running in a red swimsuit on a blue track.\" class=\"wp-image-12592\" width=\"317\" height=\"212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/porticomagazine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/jamnicky-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/porticomagazine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/jamnicky-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/porticomagazine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/jamnicky-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/porticomagazine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/jamnicky-1-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/porticomagazine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/jamnicky-1.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 317px) 100vw, 317px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Dominika Jamnicky (Photo courtesy of World Triathlon)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Those are the kinds of benefits she says she\u2019s gained \u2013 mixed in with the inevitable heartbreaks and low moments. \u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One highlight came in her first year with the U of G varsity team that won both women\u2019s and men\u2019s national cross-country titles. \u201cThat was the moment I knew that the University of Guelph was for me. The camaraderie and friendship among the athletes \u2013 I knew I was in the right place,\u201d said Jamnicky. \u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u202fAnother high point was being selected to compete for Canada at the 2014 worlds. \u201cTraining with the cross-country and track and field teams and having the former national training centre at the University \u2013 that all led to being able to represent the country at the world championships in Chicago.\u201d \u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After graduation in 2015, she trained full-time for four years and was selected for Canada\u2019s team for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia, her birth country. Earlier this year, she made her second Commonwealth Games appearance in Birmingham, England.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Referring to the Australian Games, Jamnicky, 29, said, \u201cThat was special. On the sidelines, I had integral parts of my family cheering me on. It was nice to be able to compete there, but it was mostly like a family reunion.\u201d \u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One low point came when she was still a student athlete in 2013. \u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Europe that year, she broke her arm in a cycling accident. She wasn\u2019t even competing at the time. \u201cAfter a race, I went for a training ride,\u201d she said. \u201cI slipped over train tracks going downhill and got ejected from the bike.\u201d\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back in Guelph, her rehab from that accident and other injuries pointed Jamnicky toward her current career aspirations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Adversity breeds career prospects for grad\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>She says Marco Lozej, then a practitioner at U of G\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/wellness.uoguelph.ca\/hpc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Health and Performance Centre<\/a>, inspired her to pursue chiropractic studies after her biomedical science degree. That degree program is offered jointly by CBS and the <a href=\"https:\/\/ovc.uoguelph.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ontario Veterinary College<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ovc.uoguelph.ca\/biomedical-sciences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Department of Biomedical Sciences<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jamnicky is now completing her final year of study at Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto. \u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think chiropractors have\u202fa lot of tools in their toolbox to help people with functional problems, especially injuries,\u201d she said. \u201cMy goal is to help people the best I can.\u201d \u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She aims to land clinical work in Guelph after graduation. For that, she\u2019ll carry aspects of her university education as well, especially her studies of human anatomy and physiology.\u202f\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI found that the University of Guelph approach to human sciences was ahead of a lot of other schools I looked at, especially with the human anatomy program,\u201d said Jamnicky. \u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Referring to the program run by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uoguelph.ca\/hhns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Department of Human Health and Nutritional Sciences<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uoguelph.ca\/cbs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">College of Biological Science<\/a>, she said, \u201cIt\u2019s one of the only programs in all of Canada that offers human dissection courses on cadavers. It made a difference in my understanding of the human body.\u201d \u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Grad aims to qualify for 2024 Olympics\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/porticomagazine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/jamnicky-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/porticomagazine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/jamnicky-2-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12593\" width=\"317\" height=\"211\" srcset=\"https:\/\/porticomagazine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/jamnicky-2-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/porticomagazine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/jamnicky-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/porticomagazine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/jamnicky-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/porticomagazine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/jamnicky-2.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 317px) 100vw, 317px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Dominika Jamnicky (Photo courtesy of World Triathlon)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Now aiming to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games, she trains 15 to 20 hours a week. Her regimen includes regular workouts in the University pool and distance training with the varsity cross-country team. \u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the Commonwealth Games, she has competed in European races with what she describes as middling results. Next up in late October were the Americas championships in Uruguay, where she was aiming for a top-five finish. \u202f\u00a0\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy recent European trip was not quite what I had prepared for, but that\u2019s racing \u2013 there are ups and downs,\u201d said Jamnicky, whose specialty in her sport triad is cycling. \u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said she relies upon a strong support system, including Boorsma. A former decorated Gryphon runner, Boorsma completed graduate studies in nutrition, exercise and metabolism, and is now an assistant coach with the varsity track team.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA good team makes a world of difference,\u201d said Jamnicky. \u201cNo athlete\u2019s trajectory is a smooth trajectory. It depends on how you\u2019re able to work through the downs.
