Aside from beets, you\u2019ll find almost every type of produce presented in a rainbow of colours along with \u201cvegetable forward\u201d recipes to prepare them yourself.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1654\" src=\"https:\/\/www.porticomagazine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/AllisonDay2-copy-222x300.jpg\" alt=\"Guelph graduate Allison Day is a food blogger, food stylist, cookbook author and food photographer.\" width=\"222\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/porticomagazine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/AllisonDay2-copy-222x300.jpg 222w, https:\/\/porticomagazine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/AllisonDay2-copy-500x676.jpg 500w, https:\/\/porticomagazine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/AllisonDay2-copy-200x270.jpg 200w, https:\/\/porticomagazine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/AllisonDay2-copy.jpg 710w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 222px) 100vw, 222px\" \/>Now living in Hamilton, Ont., Day studied sociology at U of G and then completed a postgraduate program to become a registered holistic nutritionist, specializing in natural foods. \u201cThat inspired me to get in the kitchen and start experimenting,\u201d she says. \u201cI grew up in the country surrounded by farms and tons of produce, and that really inspired me to learn more about where my food came from and pay more attention to what I was eating.\u201d She admits that beets aren\u2019t her favourite vegetable, but decided to name her blog after them as a pun on a news beat.<\/p>\n<p>When her younger sister was diagnosed with celiac disease and lactose intolerance, Day began experimenting with recipes that were gluten- and dairy-free. \u201cIt helped me understand there are people who can\u2019t eat certain foods, and they still want to have foods that they enjoy and love,\u201d she says. \u201cIt shows people with food allergies or intolerance that they can still eat really tasty food, and it doesn\u2019t need to be expensive or from a box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Whole-Bowls-Complete-Gluten-Free-Vegetarian-ebook\/dp\/B01CC3219A\/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&amp;keywords=Whole+Bowls&amp;qid=1591741840&amp;s=books&amp;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4615 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.porticomagazine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Book-Whole-Bowls-Allison-Day-238x300.png\" alt=\"Book cover: Whole Bowls, Complete Gluten-Free and Vegetarian Meals to Power Your day by Allison Day\" width=\"238\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/porticomagazine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Book-Whole-Bowls-Allison-Day-238x300.png 238w, https:\/\/porticomagazine.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Book-Whole-Bowls-Allison-Day.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 238px) 100vw, 238px\" \/><\/a>Aside from her blog, Day has published two cookbooks: <strong><em>Whole Bowls<\/em><\/strong> features gluten-free and vegetarian recipes; and <strong><em>Purely Pumpkin<\/em><\/strong> features recipes using the gourd in everything from pies to pizza. Despite her background as a nutritionist, \u201cit took me a long time to learn how to prepare things properly.\u201d Roasting vegetables, she adds, brings out their flavour more than boiling or steaming them.<\/p>\n<p>Seasonings, especially salt, are key ingredients in her recipes. \u201cI use more salt than normal,\u201d says Day. \u201cI think salt is a good thing. She does her own food styling and photography, making each meal look like a work of art. She also works on sponsored content for various brands, which involves testing recipes, taking photos and promoting them on social media.<\/p>\n<p>She says photographing inanimate objects like food can be challenging. \u201cSetting the \u2018scene\u2019 for a shoot can take longer than the actual photography process,\u201d says Day, who also photographed all the images in her cookbooks. \u201cStyling dishes makes a mess. From start to finish, a photo shoot for one dish can take two hours before post-production.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Presentation can make even the blandest foods look mouth-watering.
