{"id":2769,"date":"2018-10-18T11:36:07","date_gmt":"2018-10-18T15:36:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.porticomagazine.ca\/?p=2769"},"modified":"2020-10-28T14:40:14","modified_gmt":"2020-10-28T18:40:14","slug":"pet-owners-arent-adequately-socializing-their-puppies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/porticomagazine.ca\/2018\/10\/pet-owners-arent-adequately-socializing-their-puppies\/","title":{"rendered":"Pet owners aren\u2019t adequately socializing their puppies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A significant number of pet owners fail to adequately socialize their puppies, putting their dogs at risk of developing behavioural problems down the road, say U of G researchers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ontario Veterinary College professors Jason Coe and Lee Niel and post-doc Janet Cutler found that one-third of pet owners failed to expose their puppies to enough social stimuli, including people and animals, during the first few months of the dogs\u2019 lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is concerning because it means a significant proportion of pet owners are missing the small window between two and 14 weeks where socialization is such a crucial piece in the behavioural development of dogs,\u201d says Coe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a limited opportunity where pet owners can have such an influence on a puppy\u2019s life and increase the likelihood of preventing the behaviours that can result in these animals being returned to shelters.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As well, 51 per cent of pet owners failed to attend puppy classes. The researchers found significant differences in puppy behaviour and owners\u2019 disciplinary techniques between those who attended classes and those who didn\u2019t.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Puppies that didn\u2019t attend classes were more likely to be fearful of noise, such as vacuum cleaners and thunder, and to react fearfully to crate training.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pet owners who didn\u2019t attend classes were more likely to use punishment-based discipline such as yelling or holding their puppy on its back, the study says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis speaks to how puppy classes aren\u2019t just about obedience,\u201d says Coe. \u201cThey are about exposing your pet to other people and animals as well as educating pet owners.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Properly socialized puppies are less likely to be hyperactive or fearful, engage in unwanted chewing or show aggression toward people or other pets, Cutler adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThese problem behaviours in dogs are the leading cause of breakdown in the human-dog relationship and are associated with relinquishment,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cThis is concerning because it means a
