{"id":4037,"date":"2020-06-11T11:11:51","date_gmt":"2020-06-11T15:11:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.porticomagazine.ca\/?p=4037"},"modified":"2020-10-28T14:40:02","modified_gmt":"2020-10-28T18:40:02","slug":"twitter-can-be-used-to-track-spread-of-infectious-diseases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/porticomagazine.ca\/2020\/06\/twitter-can-be-used-to-track-spread-of-infectious-diseases\/","title":{"rendered":"Twitter can be used to track spread of infectious diseases"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The spread of the COVID-19 outbreak has highlighted the importance of having effective global surveillance systems in place for infectious animal diseases.<\/p>\n<p>University of Guelph researchers have discovered Twitter can help detect the spread of disease outbreaks.<\/p>\n<p>In what may be the first study to demonstrate Twitter\u2019s use as an early warning system for tracking and mitigating potentially costly and dangerous poultry diseases, U of G computer scientists and veterinary researchers found 75 percent of real-world outbreaks of avian influenza \u2013 affecting poultry, not humans \u2014 occurring in the study period were detected on the social media platform.<\/p>\n<p>The study, published recently in <em>Nature Scientific Reports<\/em>, found that in some cases, the outbreak notifications spiked on Twitter earlier than official reports from monitoring agencies.<\/p>\n<p>Prof. Rozita Dara, School of Computer Science, says, \u201cWe hope to predict outbreaks earlier as a supplemental source of surveillance.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The spread of the COVID-19 outbreak has highlighted the importance of having effective global surveillance systems in place for infectious animal diseases.
