How cognition affects educational practice.

Chemistry education research (CER) began with a desire to improve teaching.  Its published origins are akin to current-day watercooler conversations, with instructors discussing what strategies worked well for them, or didn’t.

These days, CER focuses more on students, with the desire to improve learning.  It borrows conceptual frameworks from a variety of psychological/sociological disciplines, while often incorporating quantitative foundations that chemists are more used to seeing.  In the past 20 years, popular topics have been pedagogies (especially peer learning), lab reworks (especially problem-based learning), effective ways to dislodge misconceptions (somewhat mirroring the physics literature), and students’ abilities to navigate between different representations of concepts (micro, macro, abstract).
