Centre for Workers' Health and Well-Being

Poor mental and physical health can lead to productivity problems in Canadian workplaces with estimated costs of 50 billion dollars a year. Now more than ever, we need to offer organizations successful tools to address the issues that can affect workers' health and well-being. The Centre for Workers' Health and Well-being partners with organizations to examine the challenges facing workers that can lead to wear and tear, stress, worsened physical and mental health, and lower performance. We also examine how, when workers are provided with appropriate resources, challenges can potentially lead to engagement, motivation, empowerment, and higher performance. The Centre for Workers' Health and Well-being is led by three Industrial-Organizational psychologists—Dr. Gloria Gonzalez-Morales, Dr. Peter Hausdorf, and Dr. Leanne Son Hing—with expertise in stress, well-being, work-family conflict/work-life integration, gender and diversity issues, positive psychology, and work performance. On the one hand, we have the expertise to investigate these issues scientifically using a range of methodologies: experimental studies, survey research, qualitative interview/focus group studies and fieldwork using diary-design studies. On the other hand, we have the ability to translate this knowledge for organizations wanting to solve specific problems. We have experience presenting to, collaborating with, and consulting for public, private, and not-for-profit organizations. By employing evidence-based practices, we can improve workers’ health and well-being.

 

The CWHW and its researchers have been funded by the Canadian Foundation for Innovation (www.innovation.ca), the Ontario Research Fund – Research Infrastructure (Ministry of Research and Innovation), and the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (www.cifar.ca).

Dr. M. Gloria González-MoralesDr. Leanne Son Hing and Dr. Peter Hausdorf are the Research Directors of the CWHW and supervise around 15 graduate students and 30 undergraduate research assistants who work collaboratively in the Centre's various research projects.
