39-101 Human Development F(3-0)

An introduction to the study of the development of the individual throughout the life cycle. Emphasis will be placed on the interrelationships between physiological, sociological and psychological aspects of normal human development.

39-201 Couple and Family Relationships W(3-0)

A survey of family dynamics throughout the life course, emphasizing themes of power, intimacy and family diversity. Topics may include; gender socialization, sexuality, mate selection, communication, abuse, couple interaction, parent-child relations, divorce, remarriage. Also offered through distance education format.

Prerequisites: 39-101 or (80-120, 86-110).

An overview of major theoretical approaches, research issues and methodologies, and significant research findings which relate to adult development and aging.

Prerequisites: 39-101 or 80-120 or 86-110.
Exclusions: 80-206.

39-210 Development of Human Sexuality F(3-0)

A social scientific analysis of human sexuality. Emphasis will be placed on the development of sexuality within an interpersonal context. Also offered through distance education format.

Prerequisites: 10 course credits, including at least 1 of 39-101, 80-110, 80-120, 86-110.

A study of research concerning parent-child relationships, primarily in North American society.

Prerequisites: (21-227 or 80-245), 39-201.

A study of social and health aspects of individual and population aging, including theories and implications for understanding and working with the elderly.

Prerequisites: 20 course credits, including 39-201 or 86-310.

A critical examination of research methods in family studies.

Prerequisites: 20 course credits.

39-312 Families in Canadian Context W(3-0)

Canadian families are studied from a structural perspective and are placed in social and historical context. Topics include structural variations in family form, work roles within and outside the family, the structural significance of marriage and parenthood, and social policies affecting families.

Prerequisites: 39-201.

Examination and analysis of the theories and methods of communication as applied within the processes of family counselling and consultation.

A review of current concepts of mental health. Selected concepts are described as they apply in home, school and community living.

39-406 Practicum-Family Studies I F(2-8)

An interdisciplinary focus on the family and its relation to the community. Consideration of community resources through field experiences. Students wishing to enrol in this course must consult with the instructor during course selection.

39-407 to 39-409 Topics in Family Studies (3-0)

Lecture-discussion or seminar on a selected topic in family studies. To be conducted by regular or visiting faculty with expertise in the area. Students should check with the Department of Family Studies to determine what topic will be offered during specific semesters and which prerequisites, if any, are appropriate.

39-410 Dynamics of Group and Family Functioning F(2-2)

An exploration of group processes through participation and laboratory groups. Group theory and current techniques used in group and family counselling will also be reviewed in lectures. Primarily for Family and Social Relations majors. 80-231 is recommended.

Prerequisites: 39-304 or 39-340.

39-416 Issues in Social Gerontology F(3-0)

A critical examination of selected issues affecting the well-being of the elderly in Canada. Topics will include such issues as the nature and types of community support systems for the aged, and institutionalization and its alternatives.

Prerequisites: 39-306.

39-420 Issues in Human Sexuality W(3-0)

An advanced analysis of sexual development. Specific attention will be given to sexual problems, and the concepts, methods and issues associated with sex education and counselling.

Prerequisites: 39-201, 39-210 and 2 course credits at the 300 level in Family and Social Relations, Psychology or Sociology.

39-426 The Aged, Family Relations, and Social Policy W(3-0)

An examination of aging and adult development in relation to social policy with special reference to families.

Prerequisites: 39-306.

39-428 Practicum - Family Studies II W(2-8)

Seminar and supervised field placement in health and social service agencies. The practicum and seminar will further develop and expand students' helping roles in agencies and the integration and application of theoretical knowledge from previous course work with practice. Students wishing to enrol in this course must consult with the instructor during the course selection period.

Prerequisites: 39-406.

39-481 Family Studies Thesis I (3-0)

Planning, developing and writing a research proposal under individual faculty supervision. Topic to be decided by the student in consultation with the supervisory faculty member before she/he may course select or register for the course.

Prerequisites: 39-307, consent of the instructor is required.

39-4911:2 Family Studies Thesis II (3-0:3-0)

The student will conduct and write an undergraduate thesis under the direction of a faculty member. This is a double-weighted course. When you select it, you must list both 39-4911 and 39-4912 in the same semester.
