Interdisciplinary University Courses

58-101 to 58-106 AKADEMIA Integrated Studies F,W(3-0)

Integrated courses of study exploring connections between disciplines in arts and science, normally team-taught. The courses are issue-oriented and issues will vary over time. The choice of subject will partly depend on faculty and student interest. Only available to students in the Akademia program.

Prerequisites: admission to Akademia (through B.A. or B.Sc. routes).

58-150 Introduction to Higher Learning F(2-2)

The course is designed to help new students optimize their university learning experience. The development of the individual student in the university learning environment will be examined under four headings: the history and role of universities; human development models related to academic and personal growth; methods used in scholarly and scientific disciplines and; ethical issues related to the university.

Prerequisites: registration in semester 1 or 2.

58-205 The 5000 Days S,F,W(3-0)

An interdisciplinary approach to environmental issues which offers opportunities to investigate social processes and philosophical considerations with respect to the position and influence of humankind, and the development of social conditions, values and economic activities that have led to our present situation. These investigations are carried out within the context of physical environmental considerations, such as the sate of the earth, forests, air water and our use of energy, and will lead the student to a detailed consideration of the future. (Offered through distance education format only.)

58-2101/2 Representing Canada: An Interdisciplinary Introduction F(3-0)/W(3-0)

An interdisciplinary introduction to Canadian Studies which examines the concepts, narratives, frameworks and images by and through which "Canada" has been represented, constructed and understood, including the interests which those representations serve. The first half of the course introduces students to the various approaches, methods and discourses whereby scholars in various social science and humanities disciplines construct and seek to understand various aspects of the Canadian experience. The second half of the course then concerns itself with application of these approaches and interpretations, organized around such topics as regionalism, Quebec, native peoples, gender, ethnicity, and Canada in North America. This is a two-semester course. When you select it you will be assigned to 58-2101 in the Fall and 58-2102 in the Winter semester. A grade will not be assigned to 58-2101 until 58-2102 has been completed.

58-310 Media in Canadian Life W(3-0)

An examination of the crucial role which media - print and publishing, journalism and the press, broadcasting and the electronic media, and the creative and performing arts - play in communicating and shaping representations of Canada. The course critically examines how ideas and culture are generated and transmitted in Canada, examining aspects of each of these various media and analyzing the work of various theorists and interpreters of the role of media in Canadian Life.

58-325 Beyond the 5000 Days S,F,W(3-0)

The complexity and dimensions of key environmental issues introduced in 58-205 are explored in greater detail. This will facilitate the student's ability to critically evaluate socio-economic-environmental linkages between contemporary challenges such as sustainable resources, energy, human population, education and communication, and environmental ethics. Supplementary voluntary workshop. Offered through distance education format only.

58-360 Recreation and Tourism Planning W

Application of planning theory to recreation and tourism in the private and public sectors, approaches to implementing plans, and strategies for involving stakeholders in the planning process. Focus will also be on the impact of various approaches to planning recreation and tourism. Offered through distance education format only.

Prerequisites: 20 course credits or permission of the instructor.

58-410 Advanced Seminar in Canadian Studies F(3-0)

Intended as a senior level integrating course for the program and a forum for the presentation of student research projects, this honours seminar will examine current issues and topics in Canadian Studies from a variety of theoretical and disciplinary perspectives.

Prerequisites: 58-2101/2 and registration in semester 6 or higher of the Canadian Studies program.
