VIII--Undergraduate Degree Regulations and Procedures

Continuation of Study

For continuation of study within a degree program or General Studies, every student is required to satisfy the conditions as set down under Schedule B or Schedule C. The appropriate schedule will be determined by the following criteria:

Schedule B

Students will follow Schedule B if:

  1. they have registered for the first time at the University of Guelph in a semester subsequent to Winter 1976 with no previous registration in another college or university; or
  2. they have been registered in a program at this University, are eligible to continue study in that program and subsequently transfer to another degree program; or
  3. they have transferred from another university or college and have been admitted to semester 1 at this University; or
  4. they have been required for any reason other than academic performance to withdraw from the program, and subsequently are accepted for readmission to that program.

NOTE: Those students who transfer to this University or who are readmitted with permission to follow Schedule B for continuation of study will be advised in their letter of admission as to the conditions under which Schedule B will be applied.

Schedule B Regulations

All degree programs and General Studies have established conditions which must be met for continuation of study. Continuation of study within a program is permitted provided the standards of academic performance listed below are met. In some instances, students not meeting the requirements may be allowed to proceed on probation (see Category - Probationary). If these conditions are not met the student will be required to withdraw from the program for a minimum of two semesters, but may apply for readmission for a subsequent semester. The conditions for continuation of study will be applied when the number of course attempts first equals or exceeds the appropriate number in the tables below.

In order to proceed beyond the specified number of course attempts, the number of failures must not exceed the permissible limit and the minimum number of courses with grades of 60% or higher must be achieved as indicated:

Schedule C

Normally students who transfer from another university or college will be required to follow Schedule C. The conditions under which Schedule C will be applied will be included in the offer of admission. Students who are readmitted to this University but whose prior record renders them ineligible to proceed under Schedule B will be required to follow Schedule C.

Schedule C Regulations

Continuation of study is permitted provided the student meets the conditions outlined below. In some instances, students not meeting the requirements may be allowed to proceed on probation (see Category - Probationary). If these conditions are not met, the student will be required to withdraw from the program for a minimum of two semesters, but may apply for readmission for a subsequent semester. The conditions for continuation of study will be applied when the number of course attempts first equals or exceeds the appropriate number in the table.

In order to proceed beyond the specified number of course attempts, the number of failures must not exceed the permissible limit and the minimum number of courses with a grade of 60% or higher must be achieved as indicated.

Eligibility to continue under Schedule C does not guarantee that a student will meet the "Conditions for Graduation" as outlined for their degree program.

Note: In some individual cases, the maximum number of failures permitted may be less than the maximum set out in the table below. The student will be advised in the offer of admission of any special conditions that apply. In addition, students who are admitted or readmitted under Schedule C conditions may be required to achieve more than the minimum number of grades of 60% or higher in order to meet graduation requirements.

Number of Course Attempts Maximum Number of Course Failures Permitted
1-5 1
6-10 2
11-15 3
16-20 4

For subsequent course attempts, refer to the table for Schedule B listed above.

A summary of the student's status with respect to these conditions for continuation of study appears on the academic progress report received each semester with the course selection information.
