This multigenre course explores the relationship between literary production and political power from the emergence of American culture in the seventeenth century to the fragmentation of the United States around the time of the Civil War in the mid-nineteenth century. Areas of focus may include national fantasy; the literature of revolution and federation; narratives of slavery, captivity, and native genocide; immigration and travel literature; the literature of reform, abolition, and the cult of domesticity.
