The School of Literatures and Performance Studies in English offers courses, especially at the 2000 and 3000 levels, suitable for non-specialized students as well as for those in English programs. Any student in English, or majoring in another field, who is in doubt about being well prepared for a particular course at any level should consult with either the instructor or an advisor in the department. Students should note that certain courses in Drama (DRMA*) and in Literature in Translation (CLAS*, GERM*, HUMN*, SPAN*) may be counted towards a degree in English. General Program Area of Concentration

1. 1.50 credits from ENGL*1060 and ENGL*2060
2. 1.00 credit from ENGL*2120, and 1 of ENGL*2130, ENGL*3940 or ENGL*3960
3. 2.00 credits from 3000 level lecture courses to fulfill degree requirements as listed below

In addition, students must complete:

1. 1.00 credit through any other 3000 level lecture courses on offer
2. 0.50 credit through any other seminar or lecture course on offer

It is recommended that students take 0.50 at the 2000 level in a lecture course.

• 0.50 credit in Early Modern Literature
• 0.50 credit in 18th and 19th Century Literature
• 0.50 credit in Colonialisms/Postcolonialisms
• 0.50 credit in Canadian Literature/American Literature

Honours students interested in a more concentrated program or contemplating graduate work in English are strongly advised to:

• attain a good reading knowledge of another language, such as French
• take ENGL*3380 (Studies in the History of Literary Production), ENGL*3690 (History of Literary Criticism), ENGL*4690 (Contemporary Literary Theory)
• take at least 2.00 credits in English courses at the 4000 level

The M.A. program in English at Guelph gives preference to qualified applicants with a broad experience in literary and cultural studies and related disciplines.
