Bachelor of Applied Science

Entrance Scholarships

L.A. Beattie & J.C. Beattie Memorial Scholarship

The estate of Jessie L. Beattie has established a scholarship in memory of Lillie Ann Beattie and Jeannie Cockburn Beattie. The scholarship is awarded alternately between the B.A.Sc. and B.Comm. programs. To be awarded in the B.Comm. program in 1998. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Student entering full-time studies in the B.A.Sc. program or the Hotel and Food Administration, Housing and Real Estate or Marketing Management majors in the B.Comm. program who has achieved the highest mark in English during the final year of high school. In the event of a tie, preference will be given to students from rural areas.
Amount: One award of $300

Clara E. Elliott Education Scholarships

Provided by the estate of Clara E. Elliott, MAC '07. This scholarship is payable in 4 annual instalments of $2,000. To maintain the award for the second year of study, the recipients must have at least a 77% average and continue to demonstrate the qualities on which the award was given. To maintain the scholarship into the 3rd and 4th years, the recipient must have at least an 80% average in the prior year and continue to demonstrate the qualities on which the award was given. Students accepted into the B.A.Sc. program will be invited to apply.

Qualifications: Academically outstanding students, who are entering semester 1 of the B.A.Sc. program with at least an 80% average and who plan to pursue a career in teaching. The recipients will be selected on the basis of academic achievement and evidence of participation in leadership roles, especially teaching and education. References from teachers and overall presentation of their application material will also be used to determine award recipients. Preference will be given to students planning a teaching career in areas related to family studies including nutrition education and early childhood education.
Amount: One award of $8,000 ($2,000 annually for 4 years)

Clara E. Elliott Entrance Scholarships

Provided by the estate of Clara E. Elliott, MAC '07. This scholarship is payable in 4 annual instalments of $2,000. To maintain the award for the second year of study, the recipients must have at least a 77% average and continue to demonstrate the qualities on which the award was given. To maintain the scholarship into the 3rd and 4th years, the recipient must have at least an 80% average in the prior year and continue to demonstrate the qualities on which the award was given. Eligible students admitted to semester 1 will be invited to apply.

Qualifications: Students entering semester 1 of the B.A.Sc. program or the Hotel and Food Administration, Housing and Real Estate Management or Marketing Management majors of the B.Comm. program with at least an 80% entrance average. The recipient will be selected on the basis of academic achievement and evidence of participation in leadership roles as indicated by their application material and reference letters from teachers.
Amount: One award of $8,000 ($2,000 annually for 4 years)

Adelaide Hoodless Entrance Scholarships

Established in memory of Adelaide Hoodless, by the estate of her daughter, Muriel I. Bostwick (MAC '31D). This award will be made in two equal instalments of $750. The second instalment will be paid at the beginning of semester 2 provided the recipient obtains at least a 70% average in semester 1. Application not necessary.

Amount: Five awards of $1,500

Mac-FACS Alumni Association Centennial Scholarship

Established by the Mac-FACS Alumni Association. The winner will be selected from the pool of eligible students not awarded the Clara E. Elliott Education or Entrance Scholarships.

Qualifications: This scholarship is offered to students entering the B.A.Sc. program or the Marketing Management or Housing and Real Estate Management majors of the B.Comm. program with high academic standing and who have shown leadership in community-based volunteer activities. Students who have applied to the above programs will be invited to apply.
Amount: One award of approximately $300

Mac-FACS Alumni Entrance Scholarships

Established by the Mac-FACS Alumni Association and awarded in the Fall semester. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Students entering the B.A.Sc. program or the Marketing Management or Housing and Real Estate Management majors of the B.Comm. program. Selection will be based on the highest admission average provided the student did not receive any of the major entrance scholarships.
Amount: One award of $1,000 and two awards of $500

Entrance Bursaries

Tammie Nevills Memorial Bursary

The family and friends of the late Tammie Nevills (FACS '81), a former teacher at Bluevale Collegiate Institute in Waterloo, ON, have provided this bursary. Apply to Student Financial Services by September 30.

Qualifications: An entering student who is a graduate of Bluevale Collegiate Institute in Waterloo, ON or failing that Waterloo Collegiate Institute, who has demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to eligible students who are entering a major in the Department of Family Studies.
Amount: One award of $1,200

In-course Scholarships

Agincourt Milk Producers' Association Scholarship

Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Student preferably from a farm family in York County or the Region of Durham. The student must be entering the semester 7 of the B.A.Sc. program with a good academic record and be majoring in Applied Human Nutrition. Presented in the Fall semester.
Amount: One award of $600

Ann E. Barber Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is offered in memory of Ann E. Barber, former superintendent of Macdonald Hall and Dean of Women, by the Mac-FACS Alumni Association. Apply to Student Financial Services by April 1.

Qualifications: Student entering semesters 3, 4 or 5 in the B.A.Sc. program or the Marketing Management or Housing and Real Estate Management major of the B.Comm. program with a minimum 80% average in the semester just completed. The student must have made a worthwhile contribution to student activities in residence or on- campus.
Amount: One award of $300

A.M. Bell Prize

Provided by the estate of the late Adna M. Bell. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Student who obtains the highest grade in course NUTR*4900 Selected Topics in Human Nutrition.
Semester: 8
Amount: One award of $150

Jean C. Bradley Memorial Prize

This prize was established by the 1929 class of Macdonald Institute in memory of Jean C. Bradley, instructor of foods and cookery at Macdonald Institute, and is administered by the Mac-FACS Alumni Association . Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Graduating student with the highest cumulative average in the Applied Human Nutrition major of the B.A.Sc. program.
Semester: 8
Amount: One award of $300

Dorothy Britton Memorial Scholarships

Scholarships are awarded from funds donated from the estate of Dorothy Britton (MAC '39). Awarded on the basis of high academic achievement. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Students entering semesters 4 or 5 of the B.A.Sc. program or the Hotel and Food Administration, Housing and Real Estate Management or Marketing Management majors of the B.Comm. program are eligible.

Amount: Up to six awards of $1,500

Anne Callagan Memorial Scholarship

The alumni, faculty and staff of the former College of Family and Consumer Studies established a scholarship in memory of Professor Anne Callagan. Offered in alternate years. Next offered in 1999.Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Co-op student in the B.A.Sc. program who achieves the highest cumulative grade average over the first 4 semesters of study.

Elizabeth Landels Casselman Scholarship

Awarded from the estate of the late Elizabeth Landels Casselman. Apply by April 1 to Student Financial Services, stating leadership qualities and participation in extracurricular activities.

Qualifications: Student entering the semester 5 of the B.A.Sc. with a minimum cumulative average of 80% and demonstrated excellence and leadership in extracurricular activities.
Amount: One award of $1,700

Ethel M. Christie Scholarship

Established by the late Dr. George I. Christie, former President of the Ontario Agricultural College, and his daughter, the late Margaret C. Hearn, in memory of the late Ethel M. Christie. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Student in the B.A.Sc. program who has achieved highest standing in [1.50] or more credits in English.
Semester: 6
Amount: One award of $100

Class 1930 Scholarship

A student may receive this scholarship only once. Application not necessary.

Francois Cleyn Scholarship

Established by the Canadian Textile Institute in memory of Dr. Cleyn, a former chair of the board of directors and founder of Cleyn & Tinker Inc., to foster talent in the Canadian clothing and textile industries. Apply to the CSAHS Undergraduate Awards Committee by April 1, including a resumé and a 500 work statement documenting interest and experience in the clothing or textile industries.

Qualifications: Students with a minimum 70% average in the last two full-time semesters who have taken courses in clothing and textiles and have an interest in the clothing and textile industries. Students also must be involved in extracurricular activities.
Amount: One award of $500

Patricia Cosgrove Scholarship

Apply to Student Financial Services by April 1. Offered in alternate years. Next offered in 2000.

Qualifications: Students who have completed their 2nd or 3rd semester of the B.A.Sc. program by April. Preference will be given to students showing general proficiency in both curricular and extracurricular work.
Semester: 2, 3
Amount: One award of $250 in alternate years

Sheila Esztelecky Memorial Scholarship

Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Student who achieves the highest mark in FRHD*3170, Practicum -- Child Studies I.
Amount: One award of $1,000

Katherine Fuller Scholarship

Established by the Mac-FACS Alumni Association . Apply to with a completed Need Assessment Form to Student Financial Services by April 1.

Qualifications: Student entering semester 3, 4, or 5 of the B.A.Sc. program or the Marketing Management or Housing and Real Estate Management major of the B.Comm. program in the Fall semester with demonstrated financial need and a minimum 70% cumulative average.
Amount: One award of $300

Guelph Branch, Macdonald Institute Family and Consumer Studies Alumni Association Scholarship

Application not necessary.

H.H. Harshman Foundation Scholarships

The H.H. Harshman Foundation, long time supporters of the Department of Family Relations and Applied Nutrition, provides these scholarships. Apply, highlighting leadership potential, to Student Financial Services by April 1.

Qualifications: Students entering semesters 5, 6 or 7 of the B.A.Sc. program. One award will be granted to a student entering semester 5, one to a student entering semester 7 and one to a student entering semester levels 5, 6 or 7.
Amount: Three awards of $3,000

Adelaide Hoodless Memorial Scholarships

Established in memory of Adelaide Hoodless, by her son, the late Bernard B. Hoodless. Students will be eligible for only one Adelaide Hoodless Memorial Scholarship. Apply by letter outlining extracurricular activities to the Dean's Office, CSAHS, by April 1.

Adelaide Hoodless Proficiency Scholarships

In memory of Adelaide Hoodless, the estate of her daughter, Muriel L. Bostwick (MAC '31D), has established number of proficiency scholarships to students in the B.A.Sc. program. Students can receive up to two Adelaide Hoodless Proficiency Scholarships. Apply to the Dean's Office, CSAHS, by April 1.

Qualifications: Students entering semester levels 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 of the B.A.Sc. program with a cumulative average of at least 70% . Recipients will be selected on the basis of academic merit and involvement in extracurricular activities.
Amount: Two awards of $500

Marie-Pier Lamoureux-Jones Memorial Scholarship

Established by family and friends in memory of Marie-Pier Lamoureux-Jones, a 1988 graduate of the Applied Human Nutrition major in the B.A.Sc. program. A student may only receive this scholarship once. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Full-time undergraduate student entering semester 5, 6 or 7, who is enrolled in the Applied Human Nutrition major in the B.A.Sc. program. The scholarship will be awarded to the student with the highest cumulative academic standing.
Amount: One award of $1,000

Vera Ayres MacBeth Scholarship

Mr. Bernard Ward has established this scholarship in memory of the late Mrs. Vera Ayres MacBeth, a 1923 graduate of the Macdonald Institute. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Full-time student in the B.A.Sc. program with high academic standing.
Semester: 2, 3
Amount: One award of $400

Walter and Marian MacDougald Scholarship

Established by the family of Walter and Marian MacDougald on the 50th wedding anniversary of their parents, in recognition of their gift of life-long learning to their five children. Apply by letter to Student Financial Services by April 1 and include a 500-word essay on some aspect of food supply and/or land management.

Qualifications: Students entering semester 5 or 6 in the following programs/majors/minors: B.A.Sc., B.Sc.(Agr.), B.Sc.(Env.), B.Sc. Food Science, Animal Biology, Nutrition, or Forest Science, and D.V.M. eligible and will have demonstrated leadership and a commitment to excellence. Recipients will be enrolled in a program involved in food supply or utilization, farmland conservation or woodlot management.
Amount: Two awards of $1,000

Mac-FACS Alumni Association Scholarship - Semester 2

Offered by the Mac-FACS Alumni Association. Awarded in the Fall semester. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Student with the highest cumulative average above 80% at the completion of semester 2 of the B.A.Sc. program or the Housing and Real Estate Management or Marketing Management majors of the B.Comm. program

Mac-FACS Alumni Association Scholarship - Semester 5 or 6

Offered by the Mac-FACS Alumni Association. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Student entering semester 5 or 6 of the B.A.Sc. program or the Marketing Management or Housing and Real Estate Management majors of the B.Comm. program with the highest cumulative average above 80%.
Amount: One award of $500

Mac-FACS Mature Student Bursary

Offered by the Mac-FACS Alumni Association. Apply to Student Financial Services, by September 15 for the Fall semester; by January 15 for the Winter semester; and by May 15 for the Spring semester with a completed Need Assessment Form.

Qualifications: Student who demonstrates financial need and who qualifies for mature student status. The student must be admitted to the B.A.Sc. program or the Marketing Management or Housing and Real Estate Management major of the B.Comm. program, or if already holding a degree, admitted to take undergraduate courses in the above programs. Students must be registered in a minimum of 2 courses and may receive the bursary not more than three times.
Amount: Three bursaries of $200 (one in each of Spring, Fall and Winter semesters)

Virginia McEwen Memorial Scholarships

An endowment has been established by the family and friends of Virginia McEwen, an alumna of Macdonald Institute, Class of '57 (B.H.Sc.), recipient of a University of Guelph Master's degree in 1971 and an enthusiastic participant in a wide range of activities of the University of Guelph Alumni Association for many years. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Outstanding students in the B.A.Sc. co-op program. The first scholarship is awarded on admission to a student's first co-op work semester on the basis of academic performance in all courses completed prior to the first co-op work semester. The second scholarship is awarded to a student entering the second co-op work semester, based on an outstanding rating both on the student's Work Report and the Supervisor's Report on the student's performance, as well as on the basis of academic performance in all courses completed prior to the second co-op work semester.
Amount: Two awards of $750

Ontario Women's Institute Scholarships

Offered by the Federated Women's Institute of Ontario. Apply to Student Financial Services, by April 1.

Qualifications: Students from Ontario with a minimum cumulative average of 70% and the end of semester 2 of the B.A.Sc. program or the Marketing Management, Housing and Real Estate Management of Hotel and Food Administration majors of the B.Comm. program who have been involved in extracurricular activities. If other qualifications are equal, preference will be given to students who have participated in the Ontario 4-H program and to students whose mothers are Women's Institute members. A student who has previously been awarded a W.I. scholarship is ineligible for a Ontario Women's Institute Scholarship.

Ottawa-Carleton 1983 International Ploughing Match Scholarships

Apply to Student Financial Services by April 1.

Qualifications: Students from the Ottawa-Carleton region in the year they have completed semester 2 in the B.A.Sc. program and who have a cumulative average of 70% (minimum) standing in semesters 1 and 2. Participation in extracurricular activities and financial need will be considered.
Semester: 2
Amount: Two awards of $1,000

Gertrude R. Peterson Memorial Scholarship

Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Student in the Applied Human Nutrition major who obtains the highest mark in the course NUTR*3040, Nutritional Aspects of Disease. In the case of a tie, the award will be given to the student with the highest cumulative average.
Semester: 6
Amount: One award of $500

Gerhard Scherf Memorial Scholarship

Established by the former College of Family and Consumer Studies Student Association Council in memory of the late Professor Scherf. Students are to be nominated by their peers.

Qualifications: Student who has successfully completed [15.00] credits (normally in the seventh semester) in the B.A.Sc. program or the Hotel and Food Administration, Housing and Real Estate Management of Marketing Management majors of the B.Comm. program with a cumulative average of 70% or higher and who has made an outstanding contribution to the Departments of Consumer Studies, Family Relations and Applied Human Nutrition, and the School of Hotel and Food Administration. To be eligible, a student must have served for at least one year as a member of Student government in CSAHS and participated in other College activities.
Amount: One award of $200

Morton and Pauline Schmidt Memorial Scholarship

Established by the family and friends of Morton G. and Pauline E. Schmidt of Kitchener, Ontario to recognize their appreciation of their daughters' education at the University of Guelph. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Student in semester 5 or above of the Applied Human Nutrition major of the B.A.Sc. program with at least a 70% cumulative average and who does not hold another major scholarship concurrently. If two students are equally qualified, the student showing the greatest improvement in semester average will receive the award.
Amount: One award of $1,500

Sister Mary Frederick Sheehan Award

Established by the Ontario Dietetic Association Public Service Foundation in memory of the humane and professional leadership shown by Sister Mary Frederick Sheehan through her work at St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Students graduating from the Applied Human Nutrition major of the B.A.Sc. program who have been accepted to a Dietetic Internship are eligible. The recipient will be the student with the highest academic standing.

Amount: One award of $250

May B. Stewart Scholarships

Established through the W.C. Macdonald Company of Montreal. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Students with the highest cumulative average in the Child Studies, Family and Social Relations and Gerontology majors entering semester level 5, 6, or 7. Students may receive only one May B. Stewart Scholarship.
Semester: 4, 5, 6
Amount: Two awards of $200

Mrs. Elsa Hevenor Stewart Scholarships

Endowment fund provided by the estate of Mrs. Elsa H. Stewart, formerly of Pakenham, Ontario, to students with financial need. Apply to Student Financial Services by April 1 with a completed Need Assessment Form.

Qualifications: Students entering semesters 5, 6 or 7 of the B.A.Sc. program, with at least 70% average in the last two semesters. Selection will be based on the greatest need.
Semester: 5, 6, or 7
Amount: Three awards of $500

Joan (Ellerington) Tanner Memorial Scholarship

This endowment fund has been established by her family in memory of Mrs. Joan (Ellerington) Tanner, a 1957 graduate of the Macdonald Institute. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Student graduating in any given academic year with the highest academic standing in the last 4 semesters of the B.A.Sc. program

Margaret Walker Memorial Scholarship

Donated by the Walker Family in memory of Margaret Walker, who took a great interest in Nutrition Education. Apply to Associate Registrar, Student Financial Services by April 1.

Qualifications: Students with a cumulative B+ average who are enrolled in the Applied Human Nutrition major offered by the Department of Family Relations and Applied Human Nutrition. The recipient will be selected on the basis of academic performance and have demonstrated commitment to volunteer activities.
Amount: One award of $1,250

Janet M. Wardlaw Medal

Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Presented to the Winegard Medal nominee selected from candidates from the Department of Consumer Studies, the Department of Family Relations and Applied Human Nutrition and the School of Hotel and Food Administration.
Amount: One award of a medal

In-course ACCESS Awards

Helen G. West Memorial Scholarship

The family of Helen G. West, a Mac '30 graduate who was a member of the first University of Guelph Senate and a charter member of the University of Guelph Alumni Association, with the assistance of the Ontario government's OSOTF program, has established these scholarships. Apply by letter with a completed Need Assessment Form to Student Financial Services by October 1. ACCESS AWARD

Qualifications: Students in semester 6 or higher of the B.A.Sc. program with a minimum cumulative average of 70% and demonstrated financial need. Students must be registered full-time in the semester in which they receive the award. Additionally, students must meet the government-mandated terms for receipt of an OSOTF Award.
Amount: Two awards of $1,300

In-course Bursaries

Jessie Lambden Coles Bursaries

The late Gerald B. Coles has established a trust fund in memory of his late wife, Jessie Lambden Coles, a former member of the Macdonald Institute faculty. The bursaries are for students in the Family and Consumer Studies program. Enquiries should be made at Student Financial Services.

Qualifications: Students of acceptable academic standing and needing financial assistance who have completed at least two semester levels in B.A.Sc. program
Semester: 3 to 8
Amount: A number of bursaries totalling approximately $6,000

Mildred Taylor Misener Bursaries

Dr. Andrew Grant Misener, an alumnus of the University of Guelph, has provided this endowment fund. Enquiries should be made at Student Financial Services.

Qualifications: Students in the B.A.Sc. program with established financial need.

Nelson Women's Institute Bursary

Established by the Nelson branch of the Halton District Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario. Enquiries should be made to Student Financial Services.

Qualifications: Mature student enrolled in any undergraduate or graduate program offered by the Department of Consumer Studies, the Department of Family Relations and Applied Human Nutrition and the School of Hotel and Food Administration.
Amount: Amount varies

Archie and Isabelle (Cook) Rintoul Bursary

Provided by Archie and Isabelle (Cook) Rintoul of OAC '26 and MAC '27 respectively. Enquiries should be made to Student Financial Services.

Qualifications: Student enrolled in the B.A.Sc. program or the Hotel and Food Administration, Housing and Real Estate Management or Marketing Management majors of the B.Comm. program. Students who have completed semester 4 [10.00 credits] and who have demonstrated financial need are eligible.
Amount: One award of $500

Stoney Creek Women's Institute Bursaries

Established by the Stoney Creek Women's Institute to commemorate the Sixtieth Anniversary of its founding. Apply to Student Financial Services by September 15.

Qualifications: Students from the region of Hamilton-Wentworth in the B.A.Sc. program whose scholastic standing is satisfactory and who require financial aid.
