Admission Requirements to University Programs in 1998-99

Admission to semester one of a degree program is available in the Fall semester only. Ontario secondary school students seeking admission must present the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) including a minimum of 6 Ontario Academic Course credits. An overall average of 60% on 6 Ontario Academic Course credits is the minimum required for consideration, but higher averages may be required for admission to individual programs where the demand for places by qualified applicants exceeds the number of places available in those programs. The actual averages required for admission to particular programs are determined each year on the basis of the number of applicants and the academic standing of those applicants. Recommendations and specific Ontario Academic Course subject requirements for admission to the various degree programs are outlined in this section. Students are also advised to consult Section X of the calendar (Undergraduate Degree Programs) to note those subjects which are recommended for specific majors within programs. Applicants presenting certificates from outside Ontario must have the equivalent of Ontario applicants (see information appearing elsewhere in this section regarding equivalents). In addition, equivalent individual subject requirements specified for Ontario applicants must be presented.

International Baccalaureate

Students applying on the basis of having completed the IB diploma must possess a minimum score of 28 (currently under review, please contact Admission Services). Applicants should have competed the diploma with six subjects: 3 higher level and 3 subsidiary level. Students should also include the specific subject requirements for the program to which they are applying among their higher and subsidiary levels. Transfer credit may be given for higher level courses with grades of 5 or better.

Applicants for whom English is a second language may have the English Proficiency Requirement waived if they have completed the IB diploma where English was the language of instruction.

Advanced Placement

Advanced Placement courses may be used to determine admissibility and also granting of credit or exemption. Applicants who have completed Advanced Placement courses with a minimum grade of 4 will be eligible to receive university credit to a maximum of [2.00] credits,. subject to the discretion of the appropriate faculty.

Early Admission for students currently enrolled in Ontario Secondary Schools.

All applications submitted prior to May 1 from students enrolled in their final year of secondary school in Ontario will be considered for Early Admission. Consideration will be given on the basis of the secondary school record and any other requirements for admission which are specified by the degree program. Decisions will be communicated to applicants for Early Admission in mid-June. This offer of admission is made on the understanding that all students given an offer of admission must satisfactorily complete the requirements for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma with a minimum final average of 60% in the six required Ontario Academic Course credits. Should a student fail to meet this criterion or any specific condition stated in the offer, the University reserves the right to withdraw its offer of admission. Applicants who do not receive an early offer of admission in mid-June will be eligible for admission consideration to all non limited enrolment programs by submitting their final marks. Admission consideration will be given on the basis of final grades only when places are still available at the time final grades are received in the degree program and specialization to which the student has applied. It is the applicant's responsibility to submit final or summer school or correspondence marks to Admission Services, Office of Registrarial Services, Level 3, University Centre, University of Guelph, Guelph, Ontario N1G 2W1, as soon as they become available. The following methods for submission of final marks will be acceptable:

It is suggested that students follow method 1 above in order to facilitate the processing of their application.
