Doctor of Veterinary Medicine

Entrance Scholarships

Jennifer Margaret Francis Memorial Award

This award is normally made once every four years and may be held by the student throughout the DVM program providing both financial need continues and academic performance is maintained. The award is payable over 4 years to a student from the Ottawa-Carleton region entering semester 1 of the DVM program in 1994. Apply to the Dean's Office, OVC.

Qualifications: Student from the Ottawa-Carleton region entering semester 1 of the DVM program with financial need and adequate academic performance.
Amount: Onea award of $6,000 every four years.

Grey County Cattlemen's Association Entrance Award

The Grey County Cattlemen's Association has donated an entrance scholarship to a student from Grey County entering semester 1 of the DVM program. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Student from Grey County entering semester 1 of the DVM program with the highest average in the courses attempted after admission to the Pre-veterinary Year.

Elaine Harris Memorial Scholarship

Family and friends of Elaine Harris, who in her short lifetime demonstrated exemplary care and love for all animals, have established a memorial scholarship.Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Student entering semester 1 of the DVM program. The recipient will be selected on the basis of academic performance. Preference will be given to the student who has graduated from a program in Animal Health and/or Veterinary Technology.
Amount: One award of $500

Elaine Laurin Scholarships

Mrs. Elaine Laurin, because of her compassion for animals, her long standing interest in veterinary medicine and her desire to help talented, but financially constrained, veterinary students, has generously established three continuing awards for students who have been admitted to the Pre-veterinary year and who continue through to completion of the four-year DVM program. The recipients chosen in 1995 will continue to receive the awards each year through to completion of the DVM program, provided they have achieved, on entry to DVM years 1, 2, 3 and 4 averages of at least 80% and demonstrate continued need of substantial financial assistance. Apply to the Dean's Office, OVC.

Qualifications: Academic performance and demonstrated financial need.
Amount: Three continuing awards of $5,000 per annum for students who have been admitted to the Pre-veterinary year and who continue through to completion of the 4-year DVM program.

Quinte District Veterinary Medical Association Scholarship

Qualifications: Student entering semester 1 of the DVM program with the highest average in the Pre-veterinary year who is a resident of Lennox and Addington, Prince Edward, Hastings or Northumberland Counties.

AAEP Frank J. Milne Memorial Award

The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) donates this award in memory of Dr. Frank J. Milne, an OVC faculty member from 1953-1984. Dr. Milne was President of the AAEP in 1971, and a long-time member of the AAEP Executive. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Student who has completed semester 6 of the DVM program with the highest grade in course VETM*4450 Equine Medicine and Surgery.

American Animal Hospital Association Prize

Auxiliary to Ontario Veterinarians Award

Ayerst Case Report Awards

Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Students who have completed semester 8 of the DVM program. The recipients will be selected on the basis of the quality of the case report required for completion of course VETM*4900 Veterinary Externship. One award will be given for a companion animal report and the other for production animal species, namely swine, beef or dairy. The case report must be submitted to the coordinator of the externship course by the end of semester 7.

The recipient will be selected on the basis of the evaluation of performance by the elective host and on the manner in which the Ontario Veterinary College and the profession were represented. Preference will be given to the student who has demonstrated initiative and motivation in a non-traditional elective experience in veterinary medicine.

Canadian Parrot Symposium's Prize in Avian Studies

James and Marjorie Pinkney Studentship Research Award

This award was established by Dr. R. James Pinkney, a distinguished alumnus of OVC '37. Dr. Pinkney was a veterinary practitioner in Cooksville for over forty years and received numerous awards for sportsmanship in agricultural competition and leadership in agriculture. The award will enable an OVC undergraduate student in years 1, 2, or 3 to pursue, during the summer months, a research project related to the health and welfare of animals. Students taking part in the year 3 externship program may receive a portion of the award for the non-externship portion of the summer. Applications must be submitted by the candidates and their supervising faculty members to the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, OVC, by March 15.

Applicants must submit a plan for the work/study visit and a letter from the host by April 1. Selection will be based on the merit of the proposal and academic performance.

Qualifications: Student who has completed semester 4 of the veterinary program and is planning a work/study visit to an equine facility during the summer between 2nd and 3rd year. The care and welfare of horses should be a significant component of the proposal.

Luke Thomson Memorial Award for Outstanding Commitment to Human-Companion Animal Bond

Established by Dr. Catherine Thomson-McGhie (OVC '91), in memory of her beloved German Shepherd dog Luke. Article submission to the OVC Awards Committee by January 1.

Qualifications: Students enrolled in the DVM program who have submitted an article suitable for publication dealing with the Human-Companion Animal Bond and its relevance in Veterinary Practice. Robert Walker Memorial Scholarship

This award is presented by OVC '78 in memory of their classmate, Robert Walker. Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Student who has completed semester 2 of the DVM program with the highest standing in Veterinary Anatomy.

Waltham Scholarships

Application not necessary.

Qualifications: Students who have completed semester 6 of the DVM program with the highest and second highest grades in course VETM*4180 Health Management for Companion and Sporting Animals.

Canadian Animal Health Institute Bursary

Established by the Canadian Animal Health Institute, with the assistance of the Ontario government's OSOTF program. Apply to Student Financial Services with a completed Need Assessment Form by October 1. ACCESS AWARD

Qualifications: Full-time students in the DVM program with demonstrated financial need. Additionally, students must meet the government-mandated terms for receipt of an OSOTF Award.
Amount: One award of $1,150

Dr. R.C. Croucher Bursary

Established by Dr. Ross C. Croucher, with the assistance of the Ontario government's OSOTF program. Apply with a completed Need Assessment Form to the Student Financial Services by October 1. ACCESS AWARD

Qualifications: Student registered in the DVM program with demonstrated financial. Additionally, students must meet the government-mandated terms for receipt of an OSOTF Award.
Amount: Five awards of $1,000

Dean's Access Bursaries

Established by Alumni and friends of OVC, with the assistance of the Ontario government's OSOTF program. Apply with a completed Need Assessment Form to Student Financial Services by October 1. ACCESS AWARD

Qualifications: Undergraduate and graduate students in the Ontario Veterinary College with demonstrated financial need. Additionally, students must meet the government-mandated terms for receipt of an OSOTF Award.
Amount: Bursaries ranging from $500 to $2,000

Essex County Veterinary Association Bursary

Established by the Essex County Veterinary Association, with the assistance of the Ontario government's OSOTF program. Apply with a completed Need Assessment Form to Student Financial Services by October 1. ACCESS AWARD

Qualifications: D.V.M. students with demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to students from Essex County. Additionally, students must meet the government-mandated terms for receipt of an OSOTF Award.
Amount: One award of $500

Lady Glencora Bursaries

Established by The National Trust Company, with the assistance of the Ontario government's OSOTF program. Apply by letter stating career interest and a completed Need Assessment Form to the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, OVC. ACCESS AWARD

Qualifications: Students in semesters 6, 7, 8 of the DVM program who have demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to students who have indicated an interest in pursuing a career in companion animals. Additionally, students must meet the government-mandated terms for receipt of an OSOTF Award.
Amount: Three awards of $1,500

Pearl and Percy Kaine Bursaries

Pearl and Percy Kaine, Guelph landowners and dairy farmers who had an interest in horses, have provided financial assistance to veterinary students through the Pearl and Percy Kaine Bursaries with the assistance of the Ontario government's OSOTF program. Apply with a completed Need Assessment Form to the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs , OVC by October 1. ACCESS AWARD

Qualifications: One award will be given annually to one student in each of the four years of the DVM program who has demonstrated the greatest financial need. Additionally, students must meet the government-mandated terms for receipt of an OSOTF Award.
Amount: Four bursaries of $2,500

Grant Misener Bursaries

Dr. Andrew Grant Misener (OVC '38), alumnus of the University of Guelph, with the assistance of the Ontario government's OSOTF program, has established an endowment fund for bursaries to provide financial assistance to students in the DVM program. Bambi Ann Barrett-Dagenais Memorial Bursary

Apply to the Dean's Office, OVC.

Qualifications: Students who have completed semester 5 of the DVM program. The recipients will have demonstrated a need of financial assistance and an interest in pursuing a career in companion animal practice.

Canadian Kennel Club Bursaries

The Canadian Kennel Club provides funds for a limited number of bursaries to assist students in the DVM program. Apply to the Dean's Office, OVC.

Central Veterinary Student Association Bursary

Apply to the OVC Dean's Office.

Qualifications: Students enrolled in the DVM program who have demonstrated need of financial assistant. Preference will be given to applicants who have been active in student affairs at the College.

Grant and Muriel Crittenden Bursaries

The bursaries are awarded at the beginning of the Winter semester. Apply to the Dean's Office, OVC.

Essex County Veterinary Association Bursary

Essex County Veterinary Association has endowed this bursary. Apply to the Dean's Office, OVC.

Qualifications: Students enrolled in the DVM program who have demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to students from Essex County.

Sigmund Samuel Goodman Memorial Bursary

Friends and family of Sigmund Samuel Goodman, humanist and lover of animals, have endowed funds for a memorial bursary. Apply to the Dean's Office, OVC.

Qualifications: Veterinary students who have a satisfactory academic record and demonstrated financial need.

Dr. M. Adrian Gross Memorial Bursary

Established by family, friends and colleagues of Dr. M. Adrian Gross (OVC '54), a respected veterinarian and a valued employee of the Food and Drug Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency. Apply to the Dean's Office, OVC.

Dr. Jim Lennox Bursary

Hill's Pet Products have established a bursary to honour Dr. Jim Lennox (OVC '51), a friend to veterinarians and a respected teacher at the Ontario Veterinary College (1965-1980). Apply to the Dean's Office, OVC.

Ontario Association of Equine Practitioners Bursary

This bursary is donated by the Ontario Association of Equine Practitioners. Apply to the Dean's Office, OVC.

Qualifications: Students enrolled in the DVM program who have a record of satisfactory academic performance and demonstrated need of financial assistance. Preference will be given to students who are members of the Equine Club and committed to student organized activities in the field of equine veterinary medicine.

OVC '39 Bursary

Established by the class of OVC '39 to assist undergraduate veterinary students with demonstrated financial need. Apply to the Dean's Office, OVC.

Quinte Animal Welfare Bursary

This bursary has been established by Quinte Animal Welfare Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting the protection of animals against unnecessary suffering or cruelty. Apply to the Dean's Office, OVC.

Qualifications: Students in the DVM program who have a record of satisfactory academic performance and have a demonstrated need of financial assistance. Preference will be given to residents of Lennox and Addington, Prince Edward, Hastings or Northumberland Counties.

Maude Loretta Trapp, a humanitarian and lover of animals has established this bursary for undergraduate veterinary students who are residents of North Western Ontario. Apply to the Dean's Office, OVC.

Qualifications: Undergraduate veterinary students who are residents of North Western Ontario (whole district of Thunder Bay and all the territory west up to the Manitoba border). Applicants will have acceptable academic performance and demonstrated financial need.
