Entrance Awards

L.A. Beattie & J.C. Beattie Memorial Scholarship

The estate of Jessie L. Beattie has established a scholarship in memory of Lillie Ann Beattie and Jeannie Cockburn Beattie. The scholarship is awarded alternately between the B.A.Sc. and B.Comm. programs. To be awarded in the B.Comm. program in 1998.

Qualifications: Student entering the B.A.Sc. program or the Hotel and Food Administration, Housing and Real Estate or Marketing Management majors in the B.Comm. program who has achieved the highest mark in English during the final year of high school. In the event of a tie, preference will be given to students from rural areas.
Amount: $300

Clara E. Elliott Education Scholarships

Provided by the estate of Clara E. Elliott, MAC '07. This scholarship is payable in 4 annual instalments of $2,000. To maintain the award for the second year of study, the recipients must have at least a 77% average and continue to demonstrate the qualities on which the award was given. To maintain the scholarship into the 3rd and 4th years, the recipient must have at least an 80% average in the prior year and continue to demonstrate the qualities on which the award was given. Students accepted into the B.A.Sc. program will be invited to apply.

Qualifications: Academically outstanding students, who are entering semester 1 of the B.A.Sc. program with at least an 80% average and who plan to pursue a career in teaching. The recipients will be selected on the basis of academic achievement and evidence of participation in leadership roles, especially teaching and education. References from teachers and overall presentation of their application material will also be used to determine award recipients. Preference will be given to students planning a teaching career in areas related to family studies including nutrition education and early childhood education.
Amount: One annual award $8,000

Clara E. Elliott Entrance Scholarships

Provided by the estate of Clara E. Elliott, MAC '07. This scholarship is payable in 4 annual instalments of $2,000. To maintain the award for the second year of study, the recipients must have at least a 77% average and continue to demonstrate the qualities on which the award was given. To maintain the scholarship into the 3rd and 4th years, the recipient must have at least an 80% average in the prior year and continue to demonstrate the qualities on which the award was given. Eligible students admitted to semester 1 will be invited to apply.

Qualifications: Students entering semester 1 of the B.A.Sc. program or the Hotel and Food Administration, Housing and Real Estate Management or Marketing Management majors of the B.Comm. program with at least an 80% entrance average. The recipient will be selected on the basis of academic achievement and evidence of participation in leadership roles as indicated by their application material and reference letters from teachers.
Amount: One annual award $8,000

Adelaide Hoodless Entrance Scholarships

Established in memory of Adelaide Hoodless, by the estate of her daughter, Muriel I. Bostwick (MAC '31D). This award will be made in two equal instalments of $750. The second instalment will be paid at the beginning of semester 2 provided the recipient obtains at least a 70% average in semester 1.

Amount: Five scholarships of $1,500

MAC-FACS Alumni Entrance Scholarships

Three scholarships to be awarded in the Fall. The qualifications for this scholarship are currently under review.

Qualifications: Students in the Family and Consumer Studies program. The qualifications for this scholarship are currently under review.
Amount: One scholarship of $1,000 and two of $500

Tammie Nevills Memorial Bursary

The family and friends of the late Tammie Nevills (FACS '81), a former teacher at Bluevale Collegiate Institute in Waterloo, ON, have provided this bursary. Apply to the Associate Registrar, Student Financial Services by September 30.

Qualifications: An entering student who is a graduate of Bluevale Collegiate Institute in Waterloo, ON or failing that Waterloo Collegiate Institute, who has demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to eligible students who are entering a major in the Department of Family Studies.
Amount: One annual award of $1200

In-Course Awards

Agincourt Milk Producers' Association Scholarship
Qualifications: Student preferably from a farm family in York County or the Region of Durham. The student must be entering the 7th semester level of the B.A.Sc. program with a good academic record and be majoring in Applied Human Nutrition.
Semester: 6
Amount: $600

Ann E. Barber Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established by the Macdonald Institute Family and Consumer Studies Alumni Association. Apply to the Associate Registrar, Student Financial Services by April 1.

Qualifications: Student entering the 3rd, 4th or 5th semester level in the B.A.Sc. program who has attained 80% standing in the semester just completed, and has indicated an ability to make a worthwhile contribution in student activities in residence or on campus.The qualifications for this scholarship are currently under review.

Amount: $300

A.M. Bell Prize

Provided by the estate of the late Adna M. Bell.

Qualifications: Student who obtains the highest grade in course 71-490 Selected Topics in Human Nutrition.
Semester: 8
Amount: $150

Jean C. Bradley Memorial Prize

This prize was established by the Macdonald Institute, class of 1929, and is administered by the Macdonald Institute Family and Consumer Studies Alumni Association.

Qualifications: Graduating student on completion of the B.A.Sc. program who has obtained the highest cumulative average in the Applied Human Nutrition Major. The qualifications for this scholarship are currently under review.
Semester: 8
Amount: $300

Dorothy Britton Memorial Scholarships

Scholarships are awarded from funds donated from the estate of Dorothy Britton (MAC '39). Awarded on the basis of high academic achievement.

Qualifications: Students entering semesters 4 or 5 of the B.A.Sc. program or the Hotel and Food Administration, Housing and Real Estate Management or Marketing Management majors of the B.Comm. program are eligible.
Semester: 4 or 5
Amount: Up to six annual scholarships of $1,500

Anne Callagan Memorial Scholarship

The alumni, faculty and staff of the College of Family and Consumer Studies established a scholarship in memory of Professor Anne Callagan. To be awarded in 1997.

Qualifications: Co-op student in the B.A.Sc. program who achieves the highest cumulative grade average over the first 4 semesters of study.
Semester: 4 or 6
Amount: $400

Elizabeth Landels Casselman Scholarship

Awarded annually from the estate of the late Elizabeth Landels Casselman.

Qualifications: Student entering the 5th semester levels of the B.A.Sc. program with 80% standing. Preference is given to a student showing potential for excellence and leadership in educational endeavors.
Semester: 4
Amount: $1,000

Ethel M. Christie Scholarship

Established by the late Dr. George I. Christie, former President of the Ontario Agricultural College, and his daughter, the late Margaret C. Hearn, in memory of the late Ethel M. Christie.

Qualifications: Student in the B.A.Sc. program who has achieved highest standing in [1.50] or more credits in English.
Semester: 6
Amount: $100

Class 1930 Scholarship

A student may receive this scholarship only once.

Qualifications: Student entering semester level 3, 4 or 5 who obtains highest standing in the B.A.Sc. program

Francois Cleyn Scholarship

Apply to the Associate Registrar, Student Financial Services by April 1.

Qualifications: Student who has completed 6 semesters in clothing and textiles (option I or II) within the Department of Consumer Studies. The student must have a high academic standing and be involved in extracurricular activities.
Semester: 6
Amount: $500

Jessie Lambden Coles Bursaries

The late Gerald B. Coles has established a trust fund in memory of his late wife, Jessie Lambden Coles, a former member of the Macdonald Institute faculty. The bursaries are for students in the Family and Consumer Studies program. Enquiries should be made at Student Financial Services, Office of Registrarial Services.

Qualifications: Students of acceptable academic standing and needing financial assistance who have completed at least two semester levels in B.A.Sc. program
Semester: 3 to 8
Amount: Approximately $6,000 available.

Patricia Cosgrove Scholarship

Apply to the Associate Registrar, Student Financial Services by April 1. To be awarded in 1998.

Qualifications: Students who have completed their 2nd or 3rd semester of the B.A.Sc. program by April. Preference will be given to students showing general proficiency in both curricular and extracurricular work.
Semester: 2, 3
Amount: $250 is awarded in alternate years.

Joan Doherty Memorial Graduate Scholarship

A scholarship has been established in memory of Joan Doherty, Class of '78, by her family. An application, accompanied by a one-page written statement indicating the student's purpose, goals and objectives in pursuing graduate study, must be submitted to the Chair, B.A.Sc. Awards Sub-committee by April 1.

Qualifications: Member of the graduating class in Consumer Studies who will be continuing his or her education at the Master's or Doctoral degree level in a Canadian university. The scholarship recipient will be determined on the basis of academic promise as evidenced by undergraduate academic achievement. Should equally qualified students make application for the scholarship, preference will be given to previous winners of the Joan Doherty Memorial Scholarship.

Sheila Esztelecky Memorial Scholarship
Qualifications: Student who achieves the highest mark in 39-317, Practicum -- Child Studies I.

Katherine Fuller Scholarship

A scholarship will be awarded to provide financial assistance.

Qualifications: Student entering the 3rd, 4th, or 5th semester of the B.A.Sc. program and who has demonstrated significant scholastic potential. The qualifications for this scholarship are currently under review.

Guelph Branch, Macdonald Institute Family and Consumer Studies Alumni Association Scholarship
Qualifications: Student standing highest at the completion of the 2nd semester level of the B.A.Sc. program

Amount: One annual scholarship of $400

H.H. Harshman Foundation Scholarships

Given by the H.H. Harshman Foundation. Apply to the Associate Registrar, Student Financial Services by April 1.

Qualifications: Students in the B.A.Sc. program or the Hotel and Food Administration, Housing and Real Estte Management or Marketing Management majors of the B.Comm. program on the basis of academic proficiency and potential for leadership. One award will be granted to a student entering the 5th semester level, one to a student entering the 7th semester level, and one to a student entering semester levels 5, 6 or 7.

Adelaide Hoodless Memorial Scholarships

Established in memory of Adelaide Hoodless, by her son, the late Bernard B. Hoodless. Students will be eligible for only one Adelaide Hoodless Memorial Scholarship. Apply by letter outlining extracurricular activities to the Dean's Office, FACS, by April 1.

Adelaide Hoodless Proficiency Scholarships

In memory of Adelaide Hoodless, the estate of her daughter, Muriel L. Bostwick (MAC '31D), has established number of proficiency scholarships to students in the B.A.Sc. program. Students can receive up to two Adelaide Hoodless Proficiency Scholarships. Apply to the Dean's Office, FACS, by April 1.

Qualifications: Students entering semester levels 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 of the B.A.Sc. program with a cumulative average of at least 70% . Recipients will be selected on the basis of academic merit and involvement in extracurricular activities.
Amount: Scholarships of $500

Marie-Pier Lamoureux-Jones Memorial Scholarship

Established by family and friends in memory of Marie-Pier Lamoureux-Jones, a 1988 graduate of the Applied Human Nutrition major in the B.A.Sc. program. A student may only receive this scholarship once.

Qualifications: Full-time undergraduate student entering semester 5, 6 or 7, who is enrolled in the Applied Human Nutrition major in the B.A.Sc. program. The scholarship will be awarded to the student with the highest cumulative academic standing.
Amount: Annual scholarship of $1,000

Vera Ayres MacBeth Scholarship

Mr. Bernard Ward has established this scholarship in memory of the late Mrs. Vera Ayres MacBeth, a 1923 graduate of the Macdonald Institute.

Qualifications: Full-time student in the B.A.Sc. program with high academic standing.
Semester: 2, 3
Amount: Scholarship of $400

Vera Ayres MacBeth Scholarship

Mr. Bernard Ward has established this scholarship in memory of the late Mrs. Vera Ayres MacBeth, a 1923 graduate of the Macdonald Institute.

Qualifications: Full-time student in the B.A.Sc. program with high academic standing.
Semester: 2, 3
Amount: Scholarship of $400

Macdonald Awards

Offered by the Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario. Apply to the Associate Registrar, Student Financial Services, by April 1.

Qualifications: Students from Ontario who have successfully completed their first two semesters of the B.A.Sc. program. Other qualifications being equal, preference will be given to students who have participated in the Ontario 4-H program and to students whose mothers are Women's Institute members. A student who has previously been awarded a W.I. scholarship is ineligible for a Macdonald Award.

Amount: Several annual awards of $500

MAC-FACS Alumni Association Centennial Scholarship

Established by the Macdonald Institute Family and Consumer Studies Alumni Association, this scholarship is given to a Treaty or non-Treaty Indian or an Inuit Eskimo. Apply to the Associate Registrar, Student Financial Services by September 15. If no applications are received, one half of the income will be awarded to each of two incoming undergraduate students in either the Spring or Fall semester.

Qualifications: Student who is registered in the undergraduate program in Family and Consumer Studies or as a graduate student in the departments of Family Studies or Consumer Studies. The qualifications for this scholarship are currently under review.

Amount: Scholarship of approximately $300

MAC-FACS Alumni Association Scholarship
Qualifications: Student with high academic standing at the completion of the 2nd semester level of the Family and Consumer Studies program The qualifications for this scholarship are currently under review.

Amount: One annual scholarship of $300

MAC-FACS Alumni Association Scholarship

Awarded in the Fall semester.

Qualifications: Student with a cumulative average of at least 80% entering the 5th or 6th semester of the Family and Consumer Studies program. The qualifications for this scholarship are currently under review.
Semester: 4, 5
Amount: Scholarship of $500

MAC-FACS Mature Student Bursary

Applications must be submitted to the Associate Registrar, Student Financial Services, by September 15 for the Fall semester; by January 15 for the Winter semester; and by May 15 for the Spring semester.

Qualifications: Student who demonstrates financial need and who qualifies for mature student status. The student must be admitted to the B.A.Sc. program, or, already holding a degree, must be admitted as an unclassified student to take a program of courses in the area of Family and Consumer Studies. Applicants must be registered for a minimum of 2 courses per semester. No individual may receive the bursary more than three times. The qualifications for this scholarship are currently under review.

Amount: A bursary of $200 will be awarded three times per year (once in each semester)

Virginia McEwen Memorial Scholarships

An endowment has been established by the family and friends of Virginia McEwen, an alumna of Macdonald Institute, Class of '57 (B.H.Sc.), recipient of a University of Guelph Master's degree in 1971 and an enthusiastic participant in a wide range of activities of the University of Guelph Alumni Association for many years.

Qualifications: Outstanding students in the B.A.Sc. co-op program. The first scholarship is awarded on admission to a student's first co-op work semester on the basis of academic performance in all courses completed prior to the first co-op work semester. The second scholarship is awarded to a student entering the second co-op work semester, based on an outstanding rating both on the student's Work Report and the Supervisor's Report on the student's performance, as well as on the basis of academic performance in all courses completed prior to the second co-op work semester.
Amount: Two annual scholarships of $750.

Mildred Taylor Misener Bursaries

Dr. Andrew Grant Misener, an alumnus of the University of Guelph, has provided this endowment fund. Enquiries should be made at Student Financial Services, Office of Registrarial Services.

Qualifications: Students in the B.A.Sc. program with established financial need.
Semester: All semesters

Nelson Women's Institute Bursary

Established by the Nelson branch of the Halton District Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario. Enquiries should be made to the Associate Registrar, Student Financial Services.

Qualifications: Mature student enrolled in any undergraduate or graduate program offered by the Department of Consumer Studies, the Department of Family Studies and the School of Hotel and Food Administration.
Amount: Annual bursary.

Ottawa-Carleton 1983 International Ploughing Match Scholarships

Apply to the Associate Registrar, Student Financial Services by April 1.

Qualifications: Students from the Ottawa-Carleton region in the year they have completed semester 2 in the B.A.Sc. program and who have a cumulative average of 70% (minimum) standing in semesters 1 and 2. Participation in extracurricular activities and financial need will be considered.

Amount: Two scholarships of $1,000

Gertrude R. Peterson Memorial Scholarship
Qualifications: Student in the Applied Human Nutrition major who obtains the highest mark in the course 71-304, Nutritional Aspects of Disease. In the case of a tie, the award will be given to the student with the highest cumulative average.
Semester: 6

Archie and Isabelle (Cook) Rintoul Bursary

Provided by Archie and Isabelle (Cook) Rintoul of OAC '26 and MAC '27 respectively. Apply to the Associate Registrar, Student Financial Services by April 1.

Qualifications: Student enrolled in the B.A.Sc. program or the Hotel and Food Administration, Housing and Real Estate Management or Marketing Management majors of the B.Comm. program. Students who have completed semester 4 [10.00 credits] and who have demonstrated financial need are eligible.
Amount: Bursary of $500

Gerhard Scherf Memorial Scholarship

An annual award has been established by the Family and Consumer Studies Student Association Council in memory of the late Professor Scherf. Students are to be nominated by their peers.

Qualifications: Awarded to a student who has successfully completed [15.00] credits (normally in the seventh semester) in the B.A.Sc. program or the Hotel and Food Administration, Housing and Real Estate Management or Marketing Management Majors of the B.Comm. program with a cumulative average of 70% or higher and who has made an outstanding contribution to FACS. To be eligible, a student must have served for at least one year as a member of FACS SAC and participated in other FACS activities.
Amount: $200

May B. Stewart Scholarships

Established through the W.C. Macdonald Company of Montreal.

Qualifications: Students with the highest cumulative average in the Child Studies, Family and Social Relations and Gerontology majors entering semester level 5, 6, or 7. Students may receive only one May B. Stewart Scholarship.
Semester: 4, 5, 6
Amount: Two scholarships of $200

May B. Stewart Scholarships

Established through the W.C. Macdonald Company of Montreal.

Qualifications: Students with the highest cumulative average in the Child Studies, Family and Social Relations and Gerontology majors entering semester level 5, 6, or 7. Students may receive only one May B. Stewart Scholarship.

Amount: Two scholarships of $200

Mrs. Elsa Hevenor Stewart Scholarships

Endowment fund provided by the estate of Mrs. Elsa H. Stewart, formerly of Pakenham, Ontario, to students with financial need. Apply to the Associate Registrar, Student Financial Services by April 1 with a completed Need Assessment Form.

Qualifications: Students entering semesters 5, 6 or 7 of the B.A.Sc. program, with at least 70% average in the last two semesters. Selection will be based on the greatest need.
Semester: 5, 6, or 7
Amount: Three scholarships of $500

Stoney Creek Women's Institute Bursaries

Established by the Stoney Creek Women's Institute to commemorate the Sixtieth Anniversary of its founding. Apply to the Associate Registrar, Student Financial Services by September 15.

Qualifications: Students from the region of Hamilton-Wentworth in the B.A.Sc. program whose scholastic standing is satisfactory and who require financial aid.
Semester: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
Amount: Two bursaries of $250.

Joan (Ellerington) Tanner Memorial Scholarship

This endowment fund has been established by her family in memory of Mrs. Joan (Ellerington) Tanner, a 1957 graduate of the Macdonald Institute.

Qualifications: Student graduating in any given academic year with the highest academic standing in the last 4 semesters of the B.A.Sc. program

Amount: Annual award of $1,000

Margaret Walker Memorial Scholarship

Donated by the Walker Family in memory of Margaret Walker, who took a great interest in Nutrition Education. Apply to Associate Registrar, Student Financial Services by April 1.

Qualifications: Students with a cumulative B+ average who are enrolled in the Applied Human Nutrition major offered by the Department of Family Studies. The recipient will be selected on the basis of academic performance and have demonstrated commitment to volunteer activities.
Amount: Annual scholarship of $1,250

Janet M. Wardlaw Medal
Qualifications: Presented to the Winegard Medal nominee selected from applicants from the Department of Consumer Studies, the Department of Family Studies and the School of Hotel and Food Administration.
Amount: Medal.

Helen G. West Memorial Scholarship

Established by the families of Helen G. West, a Mac '30 graduate who was very active as a volunteer in support of Alumni activities for the University of Guelph. Apply to the FACS College Awards Committee by April 1.

Qualifications: Student in semester 6 or higher of the B.A.Sc. program. The scholarship recipient will be determined on the basis of academic standing and participation at a leadership level in extracurricular activities.
Amount: $1,000 scholarship.
