GERM*1100 Introductory German F,W(4-0) [0.50]

A beginning course in German designed to achieve relative fluency in grammatical structure and idiom. Four lectures and individual work in the language study laboratory. This course may not normally be taken by anyone who has credit for Year 4 (Grade 12) or OAC German.

GERM*1110 Intermediate German F,W(4-0) [0.50]

A continuation of the study of grammar begun in GERM*1100. Emphasis on the application of basic grammatical structure in oral work and the comprehension of elementary reading texts. This course may not normally be taken by anyone who has OAC German.

Prerequisites: GERM*1100 or equivalent

GERM*2240 German Civilization W(3-0) [0.50]

A survey of German history, society and culture illustrated by slides, records, films and selected literary texts.

GERM*2400 Contemporary Germany W(2-2) [0.50]

A contemporary portrait through literature, films, slides, newspapers and magazines. Emphasis on oral work in German.

GERM*2490 German Language F(2-1) [0.50]

Conversation and reading, composition and grammar. This course is designed to develop the student's ability to read, write and speak German.

Prerequisites: 1 of OAC German, GERM*1110, equivalent

GERM*2500 German Language and Composition I W(3-1) [0.50]

Composition, grammar and stylistics; conversation and oral practice in the language laboratory. This course is a continuation of GERM*2490.

GERM*2560 Reading German Literature: An Introduction W(3-0) [0.50]

This course is designed to develop students' facility in reading German literary texts. It is to be taken before literature courses at the 3000 and 4000 level. Texts by Aichinger, Bo11, Borchert, Durrenmatt, Schnitzler, Christa Wolf among others.

Prerequisites: GERM*2490 or permission of the instructor

GERM*2590 Literary Interpretation F(3-0) [0.50]

An introductory course to provide the student with basic skills for interpreting German literary texts and for writing short critiques.

GERM*3420 Late 18th and 19th Century Drama (in German) W(3-1) [0.50]

This course is offered in conjunction with HUMN*3420 for students in the German Minor who will study texts in German. Lectures are in English. German and Austrian drama from ca. 1780 to ca. 1900 within a European context. Dramatists studied will include Schiller, Goethe, Kleist, Büchner, Hauptmann, Ibsen, Wedekind, Chekov, Shaw and Schnitzler. (Offered in odd-numbered years.)

GERM*3430 20th Century Drama (in German) W(3-1) [0.50]

This course is offered in conjunction with HUMN*3430 for students in the German Minor who will study texts in German. Lectures are in English. German drama from 1900 to ca. 1960 within a European context. Dramatists studied will include Brecht, Strindberg, Kaiser, Hofmannsthal, Dürrenmatt, Frisch, Shaw, O'Neill and Sartre. (Offered in even-numbered years.)

GERM*3440 Early German Prose and Poetry (in German) F(3-1) [0.50]

This course is offered in conjunction with HUMN*3440 for students in the German Minor who will study texts in German. Lectures are in English. A study of late 18th and 19th Century Prose and Poetry including masterpieces by Goethe, Schiller, the Romantics, Heine and the Realists. (Offered in odd-numbered years.)

Exclusions: HUMN*3440

GERM*3450 20th Century Prose and Poetry (in German) F(3-1) [0.50]

This course is offered in conjunction with HUMN*3450 for students in the German Minor who will study texts in German. Lectures are in English. Short stories and poetry of George, Hofmannsthal, Mann, Kafka, Brecht. A survey of the Expressionist movement and of "The New Realism". (Offered in even-numbered years.)

Exclusions: HUMN*3450

GERM*3500 German Language and Composition II F(3-0) [0.50]

A study of advanced German grammar as well as aspects of structure and style of the German language. Oral presentations and discussions with a special emphasis on essay writing. Translation into idiomatic German and English.

Prerequisites: GERM*2500

GERM*3530 Business German. W(3-0) [0.50]

A detailed study of the German language as it is currently used in administration and business. It will cover areas such as administration, correspondence, reports, employment, business communication and advertising.

Prerequisites: GERM*2500 or equivalent

GERM*3600 Directed Readings in German Studies (3-0) [0.50]

A reading course in German literature designed according to the program and interest of the individual student.

GERM*4940 Research Paper in German Studies. (3-0) [0.50]

A reading course on some approved topic in German language or literature, leading to an end-of-term research paper.
