Description

The Abel Prize was established by the Norwegian government in 2002 on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Niels Henrik Abel's birth. The Abel Prize recognizes contributions to the field of mathematics that are of extraordinary depth and influence.

The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters awards the Abel Prize based on a recommendation from the Abel committee. The prize carries a cash award of 7,5 million NOK and has been awarded annually since 2003.

In addition to honouring outstanding mathematicians, the Abel Prize shall contribute towards raising the status of mathematics in society and stimulating the interest of children and young people in mathematics.

Eligibility

The right to nominate is open to anyone. Nominations are confidential and a nomination should not be made known to the nominee. The prize can be awarded to a single person or shared for closely related fundamental contributions to mathematics. Deceased persons cannot be nominated. If an Abel Laureate passes away before receiving the prize, then the prize will be awarded post mortem. Self-nominations will not be considered.

Prize

The prize carries a cash award of 7,5 million NOK.

Please submit the nomination directly to the Abel Prize website. Please also submit a copy of the full nomination and OR-5 to research.services@uoguelph.ca.

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted online, using the application form provided on the Abel Prize website by the external deadline to be considered for the Abel prize presented in the following year. Please also submit an OR-5 and a completed application to research.services@uoguelph.ca by the external deadline.
