Research Areas

This funding opportunity will support projects relevant to the following two research areas:

• Building Healthy Cities

  Note: The $10 million CAD amount is provided as a guide for the development of comparable bold proposals and not meant as a funding commitment on the part of CIHR.

  • IPPH is developing preliminary ideas for strategic efforts to deepen Canada’s scientific leadership in planning, designing and building healthy cities.
  • As one part of initiating this process, IPPH is providing funding for researchers to develop and formally pitch ideas for large-scale “big science” intervention research projects focused on building healthy cities. The goal is to encourage bold, out-of-the-box, blue-sky thinking for ambitious research projects. The ideas should be geared towards a single study that would be feasibly completed in a 5-7year time-frame with a maximum of $10 million CAD (excluding the cost of implementing any interventions). The successful grantees will be brought together for each to pitch their ideas to inform possible future funding opportunities on healthy cities research.
  • Proposed ideas must fall within the mandate of IPPH, which aims to improve the health of populations and promote health equity in Canada and globally.
     
• Artificial Intelligence for Population Health
  • CIHR’s current strategic plan, Health Research Roadmap II, emphasizes a commitment to building Canada’s capacity to innovate in the area of health research; enable health researchers to conduct “high-quality data-intensive research”; and “maximize opportunities for big data to advance knowledge and inform decisions that improve health, social and economic outcomes”.
  • IPPH will provide funding for planning activities/events that facilitate the development of partnerships, teams and/or grant applications for research projects exploring the use of artificial intelligence to answer population health questions that could subsequently be funded by CIHR or other funders.
  • Applications must be focused on developing or applying artificial intelligence approaches for the purpose of addressing population health issues that are aligned with the mandate of the Institute. Applications focused on biomedical, clinical or health services research are not eligible for this funding opportunity.

Eligibility

For an application to be eligible:

1. The Nominated Principal Applicant must be an independent researcher.
2. The Nominated Principal Applicant must be appointed at an eligible institution (See Institutional Eligibility Requirements for eligibility process and associated timelines).
3. If you are applying as an Early Career Investigator, you must be within five years (60 months) of your first academic or research appointment (i.e. appointment as an independent researcher providing eligibility to apply for grants and supervise trainees) and must never have previously held a CIHR open operating grant as its Nominated Principal Applicant. Early Career Investigators who have been the Nominated Principal Applicant of priority-driven CIHR grants (e.g., planning grants, catalyst grants, training grants, knowledge translation grants, salary awards) are eligible for this distinct funding pool.
4. The grant must be held in Canada but the activities/events can be conducted either inside or outside Canada.
5. Applications do not need to articulate a direct way that the future research would benefit the health of people in Canada or globally. Articulations of indirect benefits are equally acceptable (e.g., methodological research that is helpful for future public and population health research).

The following are not eligible:

1. Activities/events starting or taking place before the funding start dates are not eligible for funding through this opportunity.
2. These planning grants cannot be used to supplement funding for activities or events that have already been funded by CIHR
3. Multiple applications for the same activity or event, submitted by either the same Nominated Principal Applicant or a different one, are not allowable. In such cases, the first application submitted through ResearchNet will be considered and reviewed. Any subsequent applications will automatically be withdrawn.
4. Recurring meetings or previously planned events will not be supported through this funding opportunity.
5. Applicants may only submit one application as a Nominated Principal Applicant to each pool.

Funding Availability

$200,000 is available to fund applications relevant to Building Healthy Cities, enough to fund twenty (20) grants.  A minimum of five (5) grants will be reserved for Early Career Investigators.

$200,000 is available to fund applications relevant to Artificial Intelligence for Population Health, enough to fund approximately ten (10) grants. A minimum of three (3) grants will be reserved for Early Career Investigators.

Maximum Project Value

The set amount awarded for each grant is $10,000 per annum for applications relevant Building Healthy Cities.

The maximum amount awarded for a single grant is $20,000 per annum for applications relevant to Artificial Intelligence for Population Health

Special Notes

Conditions of Funding

Specific to the Building Healthy Cities funding pool:

• Before the end of the one-year funding period, successful grantees will be required to electronically submit to IPPH a formal pitch of no more than five pages of their “big science” intervention research idea that falls under the relevant research areas outlined above. Formal pitches must include details about: scientific evidence supporting the chosen intervention; anticipated health and social impacts on the population; articulation of how issues related to key large-scale population interventions will be addressed, including scalability of the intervention, collaboration with municipalities, sustainability, evaluation methodology, and strategies for promoting health equity; potential scientific, funding and implementation partners; and budget details for the big research idea. Applicants consent to the use and disclosure of their formal pitches for planning and discussion purposes.
• Successful grantees must reserve at least $2,000 of the $10,000 grant to attend an IPPH designated event in the Fall of 2018 to present and discuss their formal pitch. If grantees are not able to attend the designated event, this amount may need to be returned to CIHR.

Specific to the Artificial Intelligence for Population Health funding pool:

• Successful grantees must reserve at least $2,000 of the grant to attend an IPPH-designated event in 2018 to present and discuss their funded activities and research. If grantees are not able to attend the designated event, this amount may need to be returned to CIHR.

If you need to meet a deadline set by the lead institution for this opportunity, please ensure that you provide the Office of Research with at least five days in advance of the lead institution’s deadline to review the application, or your proposed component of the project.
