Description

This program seeks proposals which focus on the partnerships of Users and Academia to promote the application of genomics-derived solutions to address key sector challenges or opportunities facing Users - User pull. With this program, Genome Canada aims to fund projects that have defined User partners and will have socioeconomic benefit to Canada. In particular, projects must have a clear partnership between the User partner and the academic researcher(s).

Eligibility

To be eligible for funding, each project must represent an active partnership between the Academic and the User. An Academic is defined as an independent investigator who is a faculty member employed by a Canadian post-secondary organization or their affiliated institutions including hospitals and research institutes. Users include companies, industry, consortia, government departments or agencies, or not-for-profits that have a credible plan for exploiting project results for the socio-economic benefit of Canada. The User must show that it has the expertise and resources to put the plan into effect or the means, as well as the intention, to acquire this capacity.

Funding Availability

There is up to $30 million available for this competition from Genome Canada.

Maximum Project Value

Genome Canada will invest a minimum of $100,000 and a maximum of $2 million in an individual project (i.e., with the maximum investment from Genome Canada, plus the required co-funding, a total investment of more than $6 million per project is possible).

Indirect Costs

No indirect costs are required on the amount requested from Ontario Genomics institute (OGI); however, indirect costs may apply on amounts requested from sponsors/partners.

Project Duration

Successful individual projects will be awarded funding for a term of up to three years.

Special Notes

Round 7: Deadline for Draft EOIs due to Ontario Genomics - Pending confirmation by Genome Canada - May, 2016

May, 2016 – Mandatory face to face due diligence panel presentation by eligible applicants

After receipt and acknowledgement of eligibility of the EOI by a portfolio manager at Genome Canada, eligible applicants will be invited to pitch their project to a Genome Canada due diligence panel consisting of the portfolio manager and external experts (note: both the User and Academic PI will need to pitch their project either in person or on the phone). The purpose of the pitch is to ensure that only those proposals most likely to succeed are invited to the full proposal stage.

Internal deadline

Please submit a copy of your EOI with OR-5 form to research.services@uoguelph.ca one week ahead of the Sponsor’s external deadline.  If invited to submit a full application, submit your application/proposal to research.services@uoguelph.ca at least two weeks in advance of the Genome Centre (i.e. OGI) deadline.

External deadline

It is expected that draft EOIs will be due to Ontario Genomics in early May 2016. Full applications will likely be due in September 2016. Dates will be confirmed. Note that the Genome Centre deadline will likely be 1-2 weeks prior to the final submission date to Genome Canada.

How to Apply

In order to better prepare the projects for this competition, OGI will also complete a due diligence review of the Expressions of Interest (EOI) prior to submission to Genome Canada. Please submit forms to: funding@ontariogenomics.ca
