The Great Lakes Fishery Commission

Canada and the United States share the Great Lakes fishery, a binational treasure worth more than $5.1 billion annually to the people of the two nations. The fishery attracts millions of anglers, supports valuable commercial and charter fishing, is a mainstay for native peoples and is the very fabric of a healthy environment. The Great Lakes Fishery Commission believes strongly that those who take extraordinary action to protect our natural resources deserve to be recognized. For that reason, the commission is pleased to present three annual awards to honour individuals who have demonstrated uncommon commitment to the principles that guide successful Great Lakes resource management. 

The three awards are:

• Vernon Applegate Award for Outstanding Contributions to Sea Lamprey Control - recognizes an individual or group furthering the cause of sea lamprey control on the Great Lakes
• Buzz Besadny Award for Fostering Great Lakes Partnerships - recognizes an individual or group exemplifying extraordinary commitment to building strong and lasting partnerships in Great Lakes resource management
• Jack Christie/Ken H. Loftus Award for Distinguished Scientific Contributions toward Understanding Healthy Great Lakes Ecosystems - recognize an individual or group making significant scientific contributions toward understanding Great Lakes ecosystems and the fisheries they support

Eligibility

Eligibility may slightly differ across the three awards, however nominations should be based on the following criteria:

• Any person or group who has displayed exemplary commitment and commitment towards the award discipline
• Any person or group who has achieved a specific accomplishment in the award discipline
• Any person or group who has displayed distinguished career-long contributions in the award discipline

Prize

The awards' recipients will receive an engraved plaque and a framed certificate signed by the Chair and Vice-Chair of the commission.

How to Apply

Please submit the nomination directly to the online application portals on the Great Lakes Fishery Commission website by the external deadline. Please also submit a copy of the full application and signed OR-5 to research.services@uoguelph.ca by the external deadline.
