New South Africa-Canada Research Chairs Initiative

International Development Research Centr (IDRC) and the National Research Foundation [1] (NRF) of South Africa are pleased to announce two new research chair initiatives. They build on NRF’s existing South African Research Chairs Initiative [2] (SARChI), as well as on the Industrial Research Chairs program, funded in part by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada [3] (NSERC) and the Canada Research Chairs Program [4] (CRCP).
Funded jointly by IDRC and NRF, these initiatives are expected to:
- create knowledge through world-class research in Africa on natural sciences and engineering (NSE) themes;
- build and reinforce sustainable research networks within Africa, and between Canada and Africa, to accelerate the production and uptake of new knowledge; and
- leverage existing research chairs in Canada and South Africa, and a second African country, in NSE fields.
South Africa–Canada Research Chairs Trilateral Partnership Initiative
The South Africa–Canada Research Chairs Trilateral Partnership Initiative seeks to invest in the development of research in sub-Saharan Africa through the establishment of tri-lateral partnerships involving researchers from Canada, South Africa, and another sub-Saharan African country. This initiative builds on existing research capabilities, links, and common research interests in all three countries.
Value and duration: Up to two projects will each be awarded a maximum of CA $900,000 over a period of up to five years.
Eligibility: Each project will consist of three co-principal investigators: one from South Africa (a SARChl chair); one from Canada (a Canada Research Chair or Industrial Research Chair); and a senior researcher from another country in Africa with a current NRF bilateral agreement, including Angola, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. All three researchers must be working in NSE fields.
South Africa–Canada Research Chairs Mobility Initiative
This initiative seeks to invest in the development of research between these two countries through the establishment of a chair matching program between Canadian and South African research chair holders. This initiative will build capacity, foster knowledge translation, and develop new lines of research.
Value and duration: Up to six collaborations will each be awarded a maximum of CA$40,000 (total for both partners) over a period of up to two years.
Eligibility: Each collaboration will consist of two co-principle investigators: one residing in South Africa (a current SARChl chair holder); and one residing in Canada (a Canada Research Chair or Industrial Research Chair holder). Both researchers must be working in NSE fields.

How to Apply
Calls for submissions will be launched on January 3, 2017 and will close on February 7, 2017. Applications must be submitted by the SARChl Chair in South Africa. Applicants will be notified of the outcome in March 2017.
