Description

The Ontario Agri-Food Innovation Alliance Tier 1 Research Program invites proposals that address Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness (OMAFA) research priorities:

  • Protection and Risk Resilience
    • Food Safety
    • Animal Health & Welfare
    • Plant Health & Protection
  • Environmental Stewardship
    • Soil Health
    • Water Quality & Quantity
    • Sustainable Production Systems
    • Productive Land Capacity
  • Productivity and Growth
    • Competitive Production Systems
    • Innovative Products & Product Improvement
    • Trade, Market & Targeted Sector Growth Opportunities
    • Strong Rural Communities

Eligibility

  • University of Guelph faculty members may apply as Lead Applicant or Co-Applicant
  • Adjunct faculty are eligible to apply if they can hold research funding at U of G and have no financial interest in collaborating organizations or co-funders

Applicants must use a @uoguelph.ca email and departmental affiliation for their Research Management System login credentials. See the Program Guide for complete eligibility details.

Lead Applicants and Co-Applicants must be fully compliant with existing Alliance requirements (e.g., reporting, financial obligations, Research Centre fee recovery) before proposal review. Applicants have 30 days after the submission deadline to address outstanding items, Proposals from applicants who remain non-compliant after this period will be withdrawn from review.

Funding Availability

  • Duration: up to 36 months (3 years)
  • Maximum funding request: up to $240,000
  • Project start date: on or after May 1, 2027

Special Notes

Proposal Compliance Checks (optional)

The Office of Research Agri-Food Partnership team offers optional proposal compliance checks. This review does not assess overall quality or scientific merit but will review the proposal for issues that are not caught during the system validation checks in the RMS. To request a review email rescoord@uoguelph.ca [5] by September 8, 2026. Proposals should be at or near completion.

If College-level review is required, your College will communicate its earlier internal deadlines.

  • All fields in the ‘General’ tab

  • All fields in the ‘Peer Review’ tab (five or more peer reviewer suggestions)

  • Co-Applicant invitation and acceptance (if applicable)

External Deadline
Thursday, September 24, 2026 - 1:00pm
  • Call open: June 16, 2026
  • Program town hall (information session): June 25, 2026
  • Full proposals due: September 24, 2026
  • Award decisions: Anticipated February 2027
