Description
Ontario Pork is pleased to announce a call for Letters of Intent (LOI) for research projects that focus on the Ontario swine industry and meet the overarching research objectives of:
- Testing potential improvements to swine industry practices
- Innovation of manure pit cleaning/disinfection methods and infected manure management to mitigate African swine fever *
- Comparison analysis of disinfection efficacy and safety of lime vs. accelerated hydrogen peroxide (Prevail®) in loading chutes under commercial conditions *
- Identifying tools for humane euthanasia of pigs weighing 8-20kg
- Analyzing the economic impacts of increased dedication of livestock trailers to U.S. loads only for increased biosecurity

All research projects that align with these objectives will be considered, including, but not limited to, swine health, swine welfare, swine nutrition, swine husbandry, swine reproduction, barn design and management, employee health and safety, meat quality and safety, marketing and consumer trends and environmental and economic sustainability. Highest priority is given to projects that demonstrate scientific merit as well as strong identification of the benefit of project results to Ontario pork producers and an indication of input or support of a project from swine industry members outside of academia. Specific details on what is expected can be found in the Outline for completion of the Ontario Pork LOI.
Maximum Project Value
There is no maximum value for the total project request to Ontario Pork. Consideration should be given to the total amount available in the research fund, which is approximately $500,000 per year, with an average request of $60,000 per project. In addition, it should be noted that for single or multi-year projects, the total request is deducted from the annual research budget of the year the applicant was granted funding. The average project length is 2 years.

Researchers will be notified of the LOI outcome the week of December 15, 2025. Please follow up with the Research Services Office once notified. | |
Internal Deadline | If invited to submit a full application to the competition, please submit the application package to research.services@uoguelph.ca [3]. | |
External Deadline | Full proposals are due to the sponsor by 4:30 pm on January 23, 2026. A short presentation to the Committee for selected proposals will take place in February 2026. |
