Reminder: Research Data Management Requirements for Tri-Agency-Funded Research

Canada's three federal research funding agencies, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) ("the Agencies"), continue to advance implementation of the Tri-Agency Research Data Management Policy. The Policy supports research excellence through responsible research data stewardship and promotes the management, preservation and sharing of research data in accordance with disciplinary, ethical, legal, commercial and cultural requirements.

Researchers are reminded that the Tri-Agency Research Data Management Policy includes requirements related to:

  • Institutional research data management strategies;
  • Data Management Plans (DMPs) for selected funding opportunities; and
  • Deposit of research data, metadata and code supporting research outputs arising from agency-funded research.

Some Tri-Agency funding opportunities currently require submission of a DMP as part of the application process. Researchers are encouraged to review program-specific requirements carefully and to consider research data management practices early in the development of funding applications.

The Agencies are also continuing work toward implementation of the Policy's data deposit requirement. Under the Policy, grant recipients will be expected to deposit digital research data, metadata and code that directly support research conclusions presented in publications arising from agency-supported research, subject to ethical, legal, commercial, security and Indigenous data governance considerations.

The University of Guelph's Research Data Management Strategy outlines the institution's approach to supporting responsible research data stewardship and compliance with funder requirements. Researchers can access support for Data Management Plans, repository selection, data preservation and other research data management activities through the Library's Research Data Management services.
