The Simons Foundation’s Mathematics and Physical Sciences (MPS) division invites applications for targeted grants to Institutes. The program is intended to support established institutes or centers in mathematics and physical sciences through funding to strengthen contacts within the international scientific community. The aim is to enable institutes to extend and enhance their mission; this program will not provide primary support for operating or establishing an institute.

Simons Foundation- Simons Symposia Program

The Simons Foundation’s Mathematics and Physical Sciences division is currently soliciting proposals for its Simons Symposia series, which brings together mathematicians, theoretical physicists, and theoretical computer scientists to interact and collaborate in symposium series that focus on one topic or tightly connected group of topics. The first meetings in the new set of series will start in winter or spring 2017. The foundation expects to fund up to four series to start in 2017.

Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) – Insight Development Grant 2016

Insight Development Grants support research in its initial stages. The grants enable the development of new research questions, as well as experimentation with new methods, theoretical approaches and/or ideas. Funding is provided for short-term research development projects, of up to two years, proposed by individuals or teams.  Insight Development Grants foster research in its early stages, but are not intended to support large-scale initiatives.

SPARK 2016 Program: Microbiome Competition

The intent of the SPARK 2016 competition is to catalyze new research directions and support innovative genomics-based projects that have the potential to advance microbiome research, and improve our knowledge and understanding of this important field.  To maximize the potential benefits for Ontario and increase the competitiveness of Ontario research and its life sciences sector, the SPARK 2016: Microbiome competition will be open to research projects involving human, plant, livestock and the environment including soil and water.

Aboriginal research is a key element identified though SSHRC’s Imagining Canada’s Future initiative—in particular, “How are the knowledge systems, experiences and aspirations of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples essential to building a successful shared future for all Canadians?”
