This course examines the social and health aspects of individual and population aging, including theories and implications for understanding and working with the elderly. The focus is on late or later life of individuals and the social institutions that are particularly relevant in late life.

Other Duties Described: 
(1) Preparation and delivery of the course material in an organized and effective manner. (2) Effective and professional communication. (3) Provide the Department Chair with an updated course outline by one week before the start of classes. Any significant changes to an outline, including but not limited to a change in textbook or assessment strategies, must be approved by the Department Chair. (4) Meet with GTAs prior to or within the first week of classes to discuss their responsibilities and complete the GTA Assignment of Work Agreements. (5) Supervise and mentor GTAs in accordance with the Collective Agreement, CUPE 3913, Unit 1. (6) Monitor and support GTAs to facilitate accurate, consistent and timely grading within a 2 week period. The use of a grading rubric is recommended. (7) Provide office hours and prompt student email consultation as required. (8) Accurate, consistent and timely grading within a 2 week period. The use of a grading rubric is recommended. (9) Provide meaningful and constructive feedback giving students a realistic idea of their performance prior to the 40th class day. (10) Timely and accurate submission of final grades as per departmental deadline. (11) Facilitate student course evaluations. (12) Invigilate final exam, if a final exam is held. (13) Submit deferred exam with grading rubric to the department, if final exam is scheduled. (14) Complete Accessible Service Provision, Making Education Accessible and Environmental Health and Safety online courses, if not previously completed. (15) Following the end of the semester, as per Article 14.10(a) in the CUPE 3913 Unit 2 Collective Agreement, you may also be requested to perform work as outlined therein, including deferrals. Reimbursement will be paid in accordance with Schedule ‘B’ of the Collective Agreement upon submission of the extra hours and dates worked to the Department Chair provided the Department Chair and Sessional previously agreed to the specific work/hours/dates.

IN ADDITION TO SUBMITTING A CV, APPLICANTS MUST INCLUDE A COVER LETTER WITH A DETAILED EXPLANATION OF EACH OF THE FOLLOWING REQUIRED AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: You are required to demonstrate: (1) Competence in teaching at the post-secondary level. This can be done through the submission of materials such as reference letter(s) from supervisor(s), direct feedback from students and teaching dossiers. (2) Recent engagement with social gerontology as evidenced by active research or professional engagement in how aging affects an individual (in the context of their society); and how society is influenced by its aging individuals. (Social gerontology examines the social and health aspects of individual and population aging, including theories and implications for understanding and working with the elderly. The focus is on late or later life of individuals and the social institutions that are particularly relevant in late life.) (3) Strong (a) written (b) verbal and (c) online communication skills.

Lectures held Tuesday and Thursday from 10 am - 11:20 am. You are required to be available throughout the entirety of the work assignment, including the undergraduate final exam period. The start and end dates may be subject to minor changes.
