This course includes critical appraisal of the research literature. Research ethics, subject selection, measurement issues, survey design, experimental and quasi-experimental designs, cross-sectional and longitudinal designs, scale development, questionnaire development and sampling strategies are discussed.

Other Duties Described: 
(1) Delivery of the course material in an organized and effective manner, using the existing course outline. No changes to be made to the course outline. (2) Effective and professional communication, including collaboration with the faculty member who will be taking over October 14, 2019. (3) Provide the Department Chair with the course outline by one week before the start of classes. (4) Meet with GTAs prior to or within the first week of classes to discuss their responsibilities and complete the GTA Assignment of Work Agreements. (5) Supervise and mentor GTAs in accordance with the Collective Agreement, CUPE 3913, Unit 1. (6) Monitor and support GTAs to facilitate accurate, consistent and timely grading within a 2 week period. The use of a grading rubric is recommended. (7) Provide office hours and prompt student email consultation as required. (8) Evaluate small group facilitation of readings and grade class participation. (9)Accurate, consistent and timely grading within a 2 week period. The use of a grading rubric is recommended. (10) Provide meaningful and constructive feedback giving students a realistic idea of their performance. (11) Complete Accessible Service Provision, Making Education Accessible and Environmental Health and Safety online courses, if not previously completed.

PhD related to field
Prior Teaching Experience: 
Successful teaching related to field at college or university level
Required competence, capability, skill and ability related to course content: 
IN ADDITION TO SUBMITTING A CV, APPLICANTS MUST INCLUDE A COVER LETTER WITH A DETAILED EXPLANATION OF EACH OF THE FOLLOWING REQUIRED AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS. You are required to demonstrate: (1) Competence in teaching at the post-secondary level. This can be done through the submission of materials such as reference letter(s) from supervisor(s), direct feedback from students and teaching dossiers. (2) Knowledge of social science research methods. (3) Recent engagement in an active research program in social science as evidenced by professional and/or pedagogical engagement in the field. (4) Strong (a) written (b) verbal and (c) online communication skills.

Days and Times Required: 
(1) Lecture Wednesday from 8:30 - 11:20 am. (2) This 0.37 assignment covers a leave by the normally assigned faculty member. The assignment covers all instruction and work related to this course from the beginning of the Fall 2019 semester until October 11, 2019. You are required to be available throughout the entirety of time period from September 3 to October 11, 2019. The start and end dates are subject to possible minor changes. Although unlikely, the end date may be subject to extension if returning faculty is unable to return on October 14, 2019.
