This laboratory course focuses on direct observation as a strategy for collecting information on children's behaviour in applied and research settings. Emphasis will be placed on theory, recording and interpreting observational data and communicating findings in written reports. IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING FALL 2020 WORK ASSIGNMENTS AND COURSE DELIVERY: The circumstances surrounding COVID-19 including limited classroom capacity have precluded the offering of this course via face-to-face course delivery. Rather, this course will be offered via alternative delivery, synchronous-virtual format (see https://opened.uoguelph.ca/academic-continuity). Other Duties Described: 
(1) Provide the Department Chair with an updated course outline by one week before the start of classes. Any significant changes to an outline, including but not limited to a change in textbook or assessment strategies, must be approved by the Department Chair. (2) Course learning activities and assessments are to be created for alternative delivery. (3) Course should be designed and delivered within an inclusive and accessible learning environment consistent with the principles of Universal Instructional Design (see: https://opened.uoguelph.ca/student-resources/Universal-Instructional-Design). (4) Preparation and delivery of the course material in an organized and effective manner. (5) Creation and maintenance of CourseLink site, including discussion board monitoring where appropriate. (6) Effective and professional communication. (7) Meet with GTA(s) prior to or within the first week of classes to discuss their responsibilities and complete the GTA Assignment of Work Agreements. (8) Supervise and mentor GTA(s) in accordance with the Collective Agreement, CUPE 3913, Unit 1 (9) Monitor and support GTA(s) to facilitate accurate, consistent and timely grading within a 2-week period. The use of a grading rubric is recommended. (10) Provide online office hours and prompt student email consultation, including student emails and concerns, as required. (11) Accurate, consistent and timely grading within a 2-week period. The use of a grading rubric is recommended. (12) Provide meaningful and constructive feedback giving students a realistic idea of their performance prior to the 40th class day. (13) Facilitate student course evaluations. (14) Submission of a final and deferred exam, if applicable, to Department ahead of the exam period. (15) Plan to offer final exam, if applicable, in a modified format through CourseLink. (16) Timely and accurate submission of final grades as per departmental deadline. (17) Complete Accessible Service Provision, Making Education Accessible and Environmental Health and Safety online courses, if not previously completed. (18) Following the end of the semester, as per Article 14.10(a) in the CUPE 3913 Unit 2 Collective Agreement, you may also be requested to perform work as outlined therein, including deferrals. Reimbursement will be paid in accordance with Schedule ‘B’ of the Collective Agreement upon submission of the extra hours and dates worked to the Department Chair provided the Department Chair and Sessional previously agreed to the specific work/hours/dates.

Required Qualifications
Degree: 
Masters related to field
Membership in the College of Early Childhood Educators with ECE Designation.
Prior Teaching Experience: 
Successful teaching related to field at college or university level
as instructor or teaching assistant.
Required competence, capability, skill and ability related to course content: 
APPLICANTS MUST INCLUDE A COVER LETTER WITH A DETAILED EXPLANATION OF EACH REQUIRED AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATION IN ADDITION TO THEIR CV. You are required to demonstrate: (1) Competence in teaching at the post-secondary level. This can be done through the submission of materials such as reference letter(s) from supervisor(s), direct feedback from students and teaching dossiers. (2) Substantive and/or applied knowledge of (a) child development (b) observational screening and assessment tools for young children (established tools and the development of tools) (c) and observational methods. (3) Experience in teaching and/or mentoring students in (a) direct observation of young children (b) lab/scientific report writing (c) calculating reliability (d) and collection and interpretation of data from systematic observations.

Lectures are held Tuesday 7:00 p.m. - 8:50 pm, followed by lab from 9:00 p.m. - 9:50 p.m. You are required to be available throughout the entirety of the work assignment, including the undergraduate final exam period.

September 8, 2020 to December 24, 2020
Wages (per semester, per full-load): 
minimum $7,430.26 (effective 2019/20)
