Bioinformatics is an integral part of the biological sciences. The goal of this course is to understand how fundamental methods in bioinformatics work and to understand how to use them. We will focus on biological questions in current research, and students will present papers to the class that utilize bioinformatics to address key and current biological questions. As much as possible, bioinformatics methods will be presented within the context of application. The key areas of bioinformatics that we will cover are: database content, access, and understanding; genetic and physical mapping; genome sequencing; pairwise and multiple sequence alignment methods; sequence motif analysis methods; and phylogenetics.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications: 
Strong knowledge of bioinformatics software, background in statistics, molecular biology and genetics, excellent verbal and written skills, familiarity with programming, molecular data manipulation
Preferred Qualifications: 
Experience with computational analysis of molecular data

Laboratories are Tuesday and Wednesday 2:30-4:20 pm
