STUDENT HOUSING SERVICES
Creating Communities Through Gryphons Nest
The COVID pandemic prevented entering year students from experiencing residence life, so Student Housing Services created a virtual community, Gryphons Nest, for them. First-year students were assigned to virtual communities of 50 students based on their academic program. Each community was led by an upper-year student acting as an online mentor. This Student Housing Services initiative was supported by Student Affairs and University partners.
Online Community Mentors (OCMs) have facilitated over 5000 one-on-one chats with students since September. Over 61% of our new Gryphons engaged in at least 1 Gryphons Nest activity. Over 45% of program participants report that Gryphons Nest has helped them connect with fellow students and develop a sense of belonging at the U of G.
