Student Affairs Divisional Learning Outcomes

Student Experience is a department in the Division of Student Affairs at the University of Guelph. Student Affairs offers a diverse range of intentionally designed learning experiences that promote the development of the person, scholar and citizen. All of our programs and services are mutually reinforcing and, as such, encourage students to draw connections between what they are learning in multiple settings and to apply their knowledge, skills and abilities in a range of contexts. A strategic framework comprised of five core learning outcomes facilitates this integrated approach:

  • personal development

  • practical competence

  • knowledge acquisition and application

  • leadership

  • citizenship

These divisional learning outcome domains are purposefully connected to the division's mission, are inter-related, and reflect the strategic role that Student Affairs programs and services play in promoting a seamless learning experience for all students. 

Personal Development

Those actions, plans or goals that aim to advance self-awareness and self-knowledge, define personal values, build or affirm identity, develop strengths or abilities and fulfill personal aspirations.

Practical Competence

Possessing the knowledge, skills, competencies and behaviours necessary to thrive in diverse settings, communicate effectively, advocate on behalf of oneself, manage one's affairs, maintain health and wellness, hone employability skills, prioritize leisure pursuits, and live a purposeful and satisfying life.
