Tenant and Landlord Advising
Off-Campus Living Advisor
Hi, my name is Katie McLean and I am the Off-Campus Living Advisor. I use she/her pronouns.
I'm here to help you navigate your off-campus living experience, from looking for a house, through signing a lease, all the way to moving out. I am a Guelph Alumni, and completed my Psychology undergrad at UofG. I have lived in Guelph since 2011 and have lived off campus for all but one of those years. After that, I completed a Masters of Education at UOttawa, and am currently working on a second Masters in Counselling Psychology. In my work here, I am always working on creative ways to improve student success and help our off-campus and commuting students feel welcome and supported.
Here are some of the ways I can assist you and services we offer in Off-Campus Living:
- Finding a home off campus
- Lease reviews and understanding lease agreements
- Maintenance Issues
- Landlord conflicts
- Discrimination in housing
- Transit route planning
- Feelings of loneliness and isolation
- Community building
- Developing sense of belonging on campus
- Exiting a lease
If you’d like to connect with me for one-on-one confidential support or advising, you can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. You can also phone 519-824-4120 ext. 53357 to set-up an appointment with myself or a member of my team.
The experience of being a tenant or landlord sometimes includes a few bumps in the road. Our staff and Peer Helpers are available to meet with you to talk about your rights and responsibilities as a stakeholder in the rental market. If you need information on finding a place off campus, your rights as a tenant, how to resolve a conflict with your housemates or landlord, or how to exit your lease early, we can guide you in the right direction.
Rental Living Resource Peer Helpers
Our Rental Living Resource Peer Helpers are here to provide rental and tenant consultations and information about living off campus. Our Peers are trained in providing guidance on finding a rental place in Guelph, reviewing your lease, reviewing your tenant rights case, discussing next steps based on the Residential Tenancies Act and providing referrals as needed. They are available during drop-in hours or by appointment.
