Power Supplies Reduced Across Ontario

The University was informed today by Guelph Hydro that the managers of Ontario's electrical system have reduced the voltage of electricity delivered to businesses and consumers by five per cent. It's intended to preserve power supplies as outside temperatures continue to rise.

As a result, the U of G community may notice that lights and computer screens appear dimmer or occasionally flicker. People who have freezers, particularly lower-temperature freezers, in their laboratories will want to monitor them closely to ensure proper temperature maintenance.

The University would also like to remind all faculty, staff and students to help reduce power consumption during periods of extreme temperatures. Please make a conscious effort to cut energy use by reducing lighting and turning off all equipment when it's not in use.

Information about energy use and conservation at U of G is available online. The Ontario Ministry of Energy also has released a list of tips to reduce energy consumption.
