Four to Be Inducted Into Gryphon Hall of Fame

Three former University of Guelph athletes, a retired staff member and the 1979/80 Gryphon women's basketball team will be honoured during the Department of Athletics' annual Hall of Fame banquet Sept. 30. The event is part of the University's Homecoming weekend.

Three people will be inducted into the Gryphon Hall of Fame as athletes. They are Heather (Noble) Barrett and Kathy Butler, cross-country/track; and Chuck Sims, football. In addition, Tony D'Angelo, a former equipment manager and building mechanic, will be inducted as a builder for his support of Gryphon athletics, and the 1979/80 women's basketball team will receive a team induction.

Barrett was a member of the Gryphon cross-country and track teams from 1988 to 1992. Setting high standards both in the classroom and athletically, she won numerous awards, including several OWIAA All-Star awards, an Academic All-Canadian honour and an All-Canadian in cross-country. In 1992, she was U of G's Female Athlete of the Year and W.F. Mitchell Sportswoman of the Year. She graduated with a B.A.Sc. in 1998.

Butler was a member of the cross-country and track teams. She was undefeated in cross-country and track dual meets in 1992, OWIAA cross-country champion in 1992 and 1993, 1992/1993 OWIAA and CIAU gold medallist in the 1,500m and CIAU titlist in the 1,000m, setting a record time of 2:47.45. A U of G Rookie of the Year Award winner and three-time All-Canadian and team MVP, she went on to represent Canada and Great Britain at the Olympic Games.

Sims is a former captain of the Gryphon football team. He held the OUAA title for most touchdowns in a game in 1988 and 1990 and set several other provincial records, and remains among the top 10 on many of the statistical charts for Gryphon football. He graduated with a B.Sc. in 1992.

D'Angelo played a valuable role in Gryphon athletics for three decades. A past winner of the John T. Powell Award for outstanding devotion and contributions to Gryphon athletics, he was a driving force behind the scenes. D'Angelo retired from U of G in 1999.

The 1979/1980 women's basketball team, under the direction of the province's Coach of the Year, Karen Lee, had a perfect 12-0 record in league play and claimed the OWIAA championship. Team members were Judy Antonio, Maryon Bruyn, Susan Burton, Ruth Carmichael, Candy Clarkson, Linda Jolie, Ingrid Kihl, Sue Lindley, Jan McMullan, Anne Miller, Holly Raddysh and manager Kate Hull.

The induction ceremony begins with a reception at 6:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn, 601 Scottsdale Dr. Tickets can be purchased by contacting Janis Macpherson at (519) 824-4120, Ext. 56133, or jmacpher@uoguelph.ca.
