Provincial Medals Awarded to Gryphon Athletes

The University of Guelph’s field hockey, rowing, rugby and cross-country teams each received provincial honours this week.

The men’s and women’s cross-country teams each took gold at the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) championships in Kingston Oct. 28, with five men and five women being named All-Stars. Silver medals went to Laura Moulton in the women’s 1,500-metre race and Cleve Thorson in the men’s 1,500-metre race. Matt Brunsting was named a Rookie of the Year, and Dave Scott-Thomas was named Women’s Coach of the Year.

The rowing team won OUA silver in the women’s open single in Welland Oct. 29. Strong finishes by all Guelph crews coupled with the largest-ever contingent have placed Guelph firmly among the top crews in Ontario.

The women’s rugby team captured the silver medal in the OUA final against Western Oct. 29. The team travels to Victoria to compete in the national championship tournament Nov. 3 to 6. U of G takes on the University of Alberta Friday at 10 a.m.

At the OUA banquet held Oct. 26, Jackie Dysart, Krissy Wishart, Erin Mitchell and Kalen Johnston, members of the women’s field hockey team, were named OUA All-Stars. Wishart was also named OUA Rookie of the Year. In addition, the team captured its first-ever league title.
