Economist from India to Give Annual Hopper Lecture

An economics professor and expert on rural poverty, labour markets, and migration will give the 14th annual Hopper Lecture on International Development Oct. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in OVC’s Lifetime Learning Centre. The event is free and open to the public.

Ravi Shankar Srivastava, a professor in the Centre for the Study of Regional Development at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, will speak on “Expanding Social Security in a Neo-Liberal World: India’s Tryst With Rights-Based Approaches.”

Srivastava, who is currently on special assignment as policy adviser to the government of India, is one of the authors of the World Bank’s report on poverty in Uttar Pradesh. He is also co-author of a book on child labour and recently co-authored a book on the financing of elementary education in India. He is a member of the National Commission for Enterprises, which makes recommendations to government on all aspects of policy related to informal sector enterprises and the informal workforce.

Srivastava received his education at the University of Allahabad, the Delhi School of Economics, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Cambridge University.

The Hopper Lecture is supported through an endowment from the International Development Research Centre.
