Emes Recommended to Be Reappointed CBS Dean

It has been recommended to the Board of Governors that Prof. Michael Emes be reappointed to a second five-year term as dean of the College of Biological Science (CBS).

Emes joined the University as dean of CBS in 2002. He arrived at Guelph during the early phases of the development of the science complex and was heavily involved in the restructuring of the colleges.

“Michael has been an integral part of the growth and development of the biological sciences at Guelph,” said Maureen Mancuso, provost and vice-president (academic). “His energy, focus and commitment have been outstanding. He’s been a critical factor in the development of the new science complex, and has helped position his college and the University for continued future success. I’m very pleased with his reappointment, and I thank the review committee for its efforts, as well as all the members of the college and campus community for their input and participation in the process.”

Before coming to U of G, Emes spent 21 years at the University of Manchester, first as a faculty member in the Department of Botany and then as dean of research in the largest unified school of biological sciences in the United Kingdom.

Here at Guelph, his research focuses on understanding the regulation of starch synthesis in crops, a topic that has considerable significance for the food and non-food sectors. He continues to teach in the Univ 1200 program, offering seminars on “Science, the Media and Society.”

Emes was recently asked to serve a second term as president of the Canadian Council of Deans of Science. He also sits on the Provincial Early Researchers Awards panel for the life sciences.

“I am delighted to have the opportunity to continue to serve CBS, the University and our students,” said Emes. “This is a unique place that is truly innovative in its research, scholarship and learning. It is a remarkable privilege to be given this responsibility, and I will strive to repay the confidence that has been placed in me.”
