Children's Author Holds Benefit for U of G Child Care Centre

Robert Munsch, one of Canada’s best-known children’s authors, is giving two benefit performances Jan. 28 for the University of Guelph’s Child Care and Learning Centre.

Munsch will read from some of his children’s books at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at the River Run Centre. Reserved seating tickets cost $10 and may be purchased at the centre’s box office. A special drawing will also be held during both shows, with winners receiving “lunch with Munsch.”

All proceeds from both performances will go to the Child Care and Learning Centre, which holds fundraisers throughout the year to purchase children’s toys, computer equipment and other essentials. “He has done one benefit concert for us in the past, and it was very popular,” said the centre’s Alison Kyba. “He has always been very supportive of our efforts.”

Munsch, who received an honorary degree from the University of Guelph last June, is a former member of the Department of Family Relations and Applied Nutrition. He has written 33 children’s books, many of which have been translated into other languages. His book Love You Forever was the best-selling children’s book in Canada from 1986 to 1988. In 1994, the New York Times named it the best-selling children’s picture book in the United States, with eight million copies sold. Others of his books, notably The Paperbag Princess, have appeared in several university curricula dealing with children’s literature as well as women’s studies. Munsch also does voice recordings of his work, and many of his stories have been released as video animation.
