U of G hosts conference on advances in agri-food technology

A conference on new advances in agri-food analytical technology is being held at the University of Guelph's Laboratory Services Oct. 26.

The Leading Edge 2000 "It's all in the packaging" conference is the second annual open house Laboratory Services has held for its current and prospective clients. The conference will feature a series of presentations to highlight recent advances in applied science that are reflected in services provided by the University laboratory. The event is open to the media.

"The main intent of the conference is to present some of the exciting, new advances in agri-food analytical technology," says John Lynch, marketing unit manager. "These will be described within the context of value-adding services and solutions available through Laboratory Services to meet our customers' needs and objectives."

The conference will include a keynote address by Terry Williams, Quality Assurance Manager for McDonald's Restaurants of Canada. Williams is a recent winner of The Ontario Food Protection Association's Sanitarian of the Year Award. His keynote address, "Why is that official knocking on my door?", will be at 1 p.m. in the board room at Laboratory Services.

Other presentations include an update on nutritional labeling and packaging, a discussion on species verification of ground-meat products, and a talk on how lab services can benefit clients. There will also be tours of the facility.
