Gain an international experience at home

Members of the Guelph community are being given the opportunity to have an international experience without leaving home by hosting an international student enrolled in the English Language Certificate Program at the University of Guelph.

The program, which is run through the Office of Open Learning, is academically challenging for the student, “but there’s nothing that can replace the full immersion experience of living with a local family,” said Peggy Nagle, manager of program development in the Office of Open Learning.

The host family benefits by earning extra money and learning first-hand about another culture. “I have hosted students from Spain, Bangladesh, Columbia, Mexico and France and it has been a wonderful experience, not only for me, but also for my children,” said Nagle. “It’s like opening their eyes to the world.”

There is still time for families to take part. For information or to offer your home, contact Lily Zhou (519) 824-4120, Ext. 2149 or e-mail lzhou@open.uoguelph.ca.
