U of G researchers study cow behaviour and maternity
Cow behaviour and stall surface preference change at calving time
Not unlike their human counterparts, expectant cows like some comfort when the big day comes, too. University of Guelph researchers have found that a maternity stall environment that makes cows more at ease when it’s time to give birth could reduce health problems that can occur after.
Prof. Ken Leslie of the department of Population of Medicine and co-investigators Meghan Brown, Tracy Kerbler, Christine Leslie and Stephen LeBlanc, observed the behaviour of dairy cows during calving on two different stall surfaces.
