Update on University/CUPE 3913 negotiations

The University and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) 3913, which represents sessional lecturers, teaching assistants and graduate service assistants, have been in contract negotiations, with nine meetings held to date. Following CUPE’s request, a conciliation officer appointed by the Ontario Ministry of Labour attended a scheduled meeting Wednesday. At the conclusion of this meeting, all parties agreed that discussions would continue as planned on Feb. 17 and Feb. 20, 2003.

This morning, the conciliation officer advised the University that the Union contacted him last night and requested a “no board” report, thus ending the conciliation process. “The University is disappointed that talks to date have not resulted in a new contract with CUPE,” said Nancy Sullivan, vice-president (finance and administration). “We are also disappointed that CUPE has chosen not to continue with the conciliation process. The University remains committed to reaching a negotiated settlement. We have asked the Ministry to appoint a mediator to assist both parties.”

Sullivan added that both parties have worked extremely hard and a number of issues have been resolved, and the University is hopeful of continuing discussions with assistance from a mediator.
