Student tests positive for TB

A University of Guelph undergraduate student has been diagnosed with active tuberculosis. The off-campus student is receiving medical care and is not attending classes.

It is important to note that tuberculosis, often called TB, is treatable and the degree of infection varies. Most people with the infection do not get sick or spread TB to others. The risk of transmission to members of the community is low. However, as a precaution, the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health Unit wants to ensure that people who might have had contact with the student are tested. Students who have been in close contact with the student have already been notified by Public Health and routine tests carried out.

As a further precaution, Public Health is recommending that students registered in Eng 3100, Eng 3410, Eng 3430 and CIS 3110 (morning section) this semester, along with faculty and staff involved in these courses, be tested. Public health will meet with the classes to provide information starting today.

Testing clinics will be held on campus Tuesday, April 1 and Wednesday, April 2, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Room 2196 of the Thornbrough Building. The clinics are open to both students and University employees involved with the aforementioned classes.

Members of the University community who have concerns are encouraged to contact either Student Health Services at Ext. 54333, or in the case of faculty and staff, Occupational Health Services at Ext. 52133, or the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health Unit at 821-2370.

Information on tuberculosis symptoms and treatments is also available on the Health Canada Web site.
