Safe Walk hours extended

The Safe Walk program, a student-run volunteer organization that provides safe and reliable walking escorts for people on campus at night, is extending its hours of operation.

Starting today, the program will be available seven days a week from 7:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. Safe Walk can be reached by calling Ext. 53200 or by pressing the “Safe Walk” button on any of the pay telephones on campus.

Volunteers are available to escort students to and from anywhere on campus, including the Arboretum and Dairy Bush path, says program co-ordinator Erin McGregor. The 95 volunteers also help monitor areas of campus, providing Campus Police with information and assistance. “The willingness of our volunteers to help ensure the safety of their peers is part of what makes Guelph one of the safest university campuses in the country,” McGregor says.

The Safe Walk program, offered by the Central Student Association, was formed in 1991 as part of the Women's Campus Safety Initiative. It has since expanded to become a service available to all students, staff, faculty and campus visitors. Since 1991, Safe Walk has assisted more than 10,000 people.

More information is also available on the Safe Walk website, and program co-ordinators may be reached via e-mail at safewalk@uoguelph.ca.
