Pinwheels on Johnston Green to raise awareness

U of G’s Wellness Centre has placed 4,000 colourful pinwheels on Johnston Green.

The display is intended to raise awareness of sexual assault and the importance of personal safety. It was initiated by the Sexual Assault Free Environment (SAFE) team, which operates out of the Wellness Centre.

According to Statistics Canada, one out of every four women and one in 10 men will be sexually assaulted at some point in their life, including being the victim of unwanted touching, child sexual abuse, rape or sexual harassment.

“We wanted to draw the attention of our university community to this important issue,” says Marlene Pfaff, Wellness Centre director. “The pinwheel display is intended to visually illustrate the magnitude of the continuum of sexual assault.”

The pinwheels will remain on Johnston Green through Friday.
