U of G names new athletics director

The University of Guelph has appointed a new director of athletics. Thomas Kendall, currently head of athletics at St. Francis Xavier University, will be joining U of G in August.

The announcement was made today by Brenda Whiteside, associate vice-president (student affairs), who chaired the search committee. As a member of the associate vice-president's senior team, Kendall will be responsible for all athletic and recreation matters on campus.

“I am very pleased by the appointment,” Whiteside said. “Tom brings a wealth of experience to this position. His holistic approach to student athletes and participation is a perfect fit for Guelph. He has a proven track record of leading his team to excellence. The university expects that its already strong programs will continue to flourish under his leadership.”

Under Kendall’s direction, St. Francis Xavier University experienced growth in all aspects of athletics, including facilities, programs, external support and participation. He also coached women’s basketball for 21 years at the University of Winnipeg and at California University of Pennsylvania and was chair of the Department of Sport Studies at the University of Winnipeg for 10 years. He received his BA in physical education and his MA in physical education administration from the University of Alberta.
