OUA Figure Skating Championships 2001

The best Ontario University Athletics figure skaters (195 to be exact) will come together at the University of Guelph on Saturday, February 24th and Sunday, February 25th to compete in the 30th annual OUA Figure Skating Championships. This event will take place in the Gold Arena of the Gryphon Centre. Eleven teams including Brock, Guelph, Laurier, McGill, Queen’s, Ryerson, Toronto, Trent, Waterloo, Western and York will vie for the OUA team title and OQWICA Trophy.

Guelph enters this championship weekend after strong third place performances at both the Queen’s and Waterloo Invitational meets. The Gryphons will challenge the Queen’s Golden Gaels, 6-time winners and defending champions, for the title. Guelph last took gold in 1993-94 competitive season.

Gryphon skaters Erin Jacobs, rookie, Heather Fotherby and Brianne McVeigh all have their sights set on medals in the Open Solo Dance, Short Program and Intermediate Singles events respectively. Jacobs combined with rookie, Jill Nealson, is aiming for medals in the Senior Similar Dance and Variation Dance. This duo will also compete in a fours event (Bronze Rhythm Dance) where they usually place in the top three as well. In the Synchronized event (formerly Precision), 16 Gryphons on the ice at the same time will attempt to defend their first place finish at the Waterloo Invitational.
