U of G Homecoming this weekend

The University of Guelph will hold its 77th annual Homecoming Weekend football game Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. The U of G Gryphons will take on the Concordia Stingers in Alumni Stadium.

Tickets will be available at the stadium starting at 12:30 p.m. They may also be purchased in advance at the Mitchell Athletics Centre, 824-4120, Ext. 8140. Cost is $8 for adults and $5 for students, with $1 from each ticket going to U of G's United Way campaign.

Other Saturday activities include the annual Glory Bowl, a football game involving former Gryphon football players, at 10 a.m. in Alumni Stadium, and a Holly Cole concert, presented by U of G's Central Student Association, at 8 p.m. at the River Run Centre.

In addition, the Gryphon Club Hall of Fame will induct seven new members Oct. 13. The roster of new members includes former basketball star Tim Mau, the only Gryphon ever to be named CIAU All-Canadian four years in a row. Mau, who earned his BA and MA in political science from Guelph before doing a D.Phil. at Oxford University, is now senior development manager for Guelph's College of Social and Applied Human Sciences and an adjunct professor of political science. Other former Gryphon athletes being honoured are Sue Lindley, B.Sc. (H.K.) '82, basketball and field hockey; Peter Langford, BA '85, football; and Andy Longpre, BA '81, wrestling. Lindley was a four-year OWIAA All-Star (1978 to 1981) and also won OWIAA championship medals all four years. Langford played on Guelph's top football team of the 1980s, winning OUA All-Star awards in 1981, 1982 and 1985 and CIAU All-Canadian in 1982. He was drafted by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 1982. Longpre was named the CIAU most outstanding wrestler in 1979 for winning 38 of 40 matches. He was an OUAA and CIAU gold medallist in 1980 and 1981.

The Gryphon Club Hall of Fame will also honour Alan Singleton, head coach of men's hockey from 1956 to 1963 and 1967 to 1969, by adding him to the Honour Roll of Builders. The 1975/76 men's hockey team, winners of Guelph's first OUAA championship and the CIAU silver medal, is also being recognized on its 25th anniversary. In addition, OUA football referee Ken Green, current president of the Canadian Football Officials Association, will receive the Award of Merit.

The Gryphon Club Hall of Fame began in 1984 to honour the many athletes and builders who have made outstanding contributions to U of G's athletics program. Plaques bearing their pictures and highlighting their accomplishments are displayed in the Mitchell Athletics Centre.
