Portico reinstallation to begin

The University of Guelph's historic portico, which has been undergoing restoration, will be making its way back to campus beginning Monday, Nov. 1.

It will take approximately three weeks to reinstall the columns and pilasters that have been restored by Summit Restoration Ltd. of Burlington. The $75,000 project is a 50th anniversary project of the Ontario Agriculture College class of 1949.

Originally fronting a farm house on Moreton Lodge Farm, which was purchased for the founding of OAC in 1874, the ornate front porch stood at the entrance of the first college residence until it was demolished in 1929 to make way for the construction of Johnston Hall.

The portico has stood on Johnston Green for 65 years, where it has become one of the most-photographed sites on campus. Over time, water damage had weakened the limestone structure.
