U of G students get ready to serve community

Saturday, Oct. 2 hundreds of University of Guelph students will venture into the community to help local non-profit organizations as part of "Project Serve," an initiative that offers students the opportunity to spend a morning volunteering.

Project Serve is part of the Citizenship Education Program in U of G's Counselling and Student Resource Centre. Students will gather at U of G at 9 a.m., from where they will be assigned projects and transported to job sites. At 1 p.m., students will return to campus for an appreciation lunch and to discuss their volunteer experience.

Projects include:

-- Guelph Humane Society: Walking dogs, assisting with animal care and cleaning, and assembling prize bags for an upcoming event.

-- Hanlon Creek Rehabilitation Group: Assisting with the construction of a boardwalk.

-- Cambridge Food Bank: Kicking off Thanksgiving food drive.

-- Elliott Retirement Home: Interacting one-on-one with residents, including playing cards, reading and playing games.

-- Village of Riverside Glen: Preparing flowerbeds and helping plant spring bulbs.

-- Wyndham House: Yard landscaping, painting, dismantling an old shed.

-- Meals on Wheels: Delivering hot meals.

-- St. Joseph Hospital and Home: Participating in the horticulture therapy program.

-- Guelph Wellington Association for Community Living: Preparing the building for an open house.

-- CFRU 93.3 FM: Reorganizing libraries and record station identifications.

-- Sunrise Equestrian and Recreation Centre: Sanding a new lounge ceiling, cleaning paddocks and viewing special-needs clients during a riding lesson.

-- Guelph Food Bank: Sorting and stocking foodstuffs.

-- Guelph International Resource Centre: Helping move into new offices.
